Blue Moon, Part Six

Tomorrow is a TiVo National Holiday.

It's Blue Moon Day...Part Six.

Five years ago the production line cranked up and we started shipping TiVo DVR's to customers.

It wasn't trivial, or a slam dunk. Everyone was focused on one thing...get the baby out the door. Lots of late hours. Lost sleep. Spouses who forgot what we all looked like.

But we did it. And at the end, there was a company-wide field trip to the production line (there was a plant building them here in San Jose) and we watched the systems coming off the line. Drank champagne. Wore blue lab coats. Lots of smiles.

The first production system had been set aside, and we all gathered around to put our John Hancock's on the box. It's sitting in a display case here at TiVo, surrounded by pictures from the day. I stopped by there earlier today to take another look and soak up some of the fun from those pictures. A lot of happy people. Many still here, but a few off doing other things now. Good people.

And so we built more DVR's. And more. And more. It seems we came up with something insanely great, and we aren't done yet.

At the end of that field trip, after one or two glasses of champagne, Mike (our CEO) announced that we could all have a day off. He was locking the doors...nobody was to come to work. He didn't have to tell us twice.

Ever since then the last Friday in March has been designated an official day of rest and relaxation for TiVo employees. Blue Moon Day. No work. More play. It's mandatory...it's on our calendars.

Blue Moon was the codename for our launch. When there are two full moons in the same month, that's a blue moon. It doesn't happen very often, it's a special event. But March of 1999 happened to be a blue moon month. It was the perfect codename...it had the due date cooked in!

So tomorrow is Blue Moon day number six around here. We won't be at work. You won't find us here. Everyone will be off enjoying the day. Well, except for some of the customer support folks...we do have to keep the phones manned.

Take a moment tomorrow to congratulate your TiVo. It's having a birthday.

And if you do have to call us...be extra nice to the support folks.

Cheers,
Pony

I'll go home and congratulate the still-working TiVo for which I waited VERY impatiently for production to start and to get down to my name on the order list.

Actually, as per the link below, the second full moon in a month has only been called a blue moon since 1946 when a mistake was made in a "Sky and Telescope" publication. The ages-old blue moon is the third full moon in a season that has four full moons.
But hey, congratulations anyway, and may TiVo be around for a Blue Moon.

and from another link on that site:
http://www.obliquity.com/astro/bluemoon.html

On average, there will be 41 months that have two Full Moons in every century, so you could say that once in a Blue Moon actually means once every two-and-a-half years.

Enjoy the day Tivo employees!

Since I am on business travel, my 4 Tivo's are busily recording in preparation for our belated celebration of all things Tivo.

Thanks for a great product!

I buy *all* the latest gadgets. Computers, MP3 players, DVD, home audio, car products... you name it. Most are novel for a while until I move onto something else.

In August of 2001 I purchased my first Tivo. My wife who never cares about any of my gadgets... well even she loved this. Ever since Tivo has found a place in my home, now being 2 Series 2 Tivos strong. It is the only electronic thing I own where I would go out and buy a new one the instant an old one broke.

Thanks Tivo.
