American Idol 5/11 and 5/12 *SPOILERS*

Here's my 2-cents worth.

Tonights rank:

Diana
Fantasia
LaToya
Jasmine

Jasmine really didn't do too well tonight. She did much better last week (and many of you thought she did poor last week). I suprised myself by thinking Fantasia was better than LaToya. Diana did great, though.

You know, I've been trying to decide from week one whether I want La Toya or Fantasia to win. It's always been between those two for me. Tonight it finally hit me how much Fantasia deserves to win over LT. While La Toya is technically very good, and has a powerhouse of a voice, she just doesn't have the personality to back it up. Fantasia makes anything she sings interesting, even if the song itself kind of sucks. She has the special extra something that Justapixel keeps talking about.

Yeah, I feel SO sorry for Jasmine... it was so hard to watch her break down after her performance... but unfortunately, and she knows it, she's done after tonight. She wasn't great tonight. Give her 6 months off, and you'll see her again though.

I still can't stand the unabated saccharine coming from Diana... she was good aside from that tonight. She's just too disney-fied for my taste.

LaToya was excellent tonight, as she has been every week... her song choices were great, and she performed them well.

And Fantasia... bleh.

Diana- Excellent night
Fantasia- kinda liked her first song, second song sucked.
La Toya- Good singer, but nothin' special.
Jasmine- Her vocal coach should be shot, Great potential, lousy fundamentals

Personally, I am surprised Jasmine has lasted as long as she has - the cute factor has definitely helped her, but I think as a performer she is just OK.

Much as I hate to admit it, because I absolutely hate that Saccharine sweet personality of hers, Diana did a really great job last night.

Latoya - as always - had some great vocals, but her delivery just leaves me cold. I liked her better early in the competition, but she really does nothing for me now.

I think Fantasia, over everyone, has the "Stuff". The fact that not everyone likes her vocal quality and some people have issues with her personality just makes her all the more interesting and compelling as a performer. Her uniqueness really sets her apart from the crowd.

Yeah, the Stepford Daughter did really well last night.

Loadstar, I just don't get your hatred of Fantasia and your love of Jasmine.

Oh well, to each his own.

Wow. What an amazing pair of performances from Diana last night. She really put her youth and energy into the song, and I didn't get the "old soul" vibe from her last night. Like Simon mentioned, I won't be surprised if it's her in the final two.

My pick for the bottom two: Fantasia and Jasmine, with Jasmine going home.

Jasmine - The first song was just awful...but the dress was awesome! If she could convey some more sexiness (maturity probably) with that dress, she'd be alot better.

LaToya - Great singer, boring performer. The second song was much better, but Simon hit the nail on the head when he said that he doesn't know anything about her personality.

Fantasia - Hands down the best of the bunch. Disco is not her thing though.

Diana - Not bad. Getting more mature, but still has that cheesiness when she talks afterwards. My wife thinks she gained weight since the beginning. I just think she is starting to dress in skimpier clothes.

Bottom 2 tonight: Jasmine and LaToya w/ Jasmine crying her way back to Hawaii. Don't know if we'll ever see her again.

Diana
LaToya
Fantasia
Jasmine

Jasmine's out--I'd bet the farm on it. Diana's first song was kinda poor, IMO--the low notes didn't really showcase her voice. But her second song, as well as her placement as the last singer of the night, put her on top.

LaToya has a very good voice. She's the one that they said a few weeks ago just kinda came out of nowhere, right? I thought both of her performances were good--but she doesn't have a spark.

Fantasia did a decent job, but I was surprised that this didn't seem to be her type of music.

Next week will be very interesting. I think it's all gonna depend on song style. I hope to see Fantasia take it all (simply because, out of everyone, she's definately got the spark), but her unique voice lends itself to some styles and doesn't lend itself to others. If she gets stuck in a style that doesn't suit her next week, she could be off. But if it does suit her, then it's gonna be up to personality of the other two--Diana is the sure winner there.

I'm gonna make a predicition--all along I've said that the final two will be Diana and Fantasia. I'm putting Diana in the final spot right now.

Diana has always been a little "chunky", but hid it better earlier on. Her wardrobe choices of late have been younger, sexier and more fashionable, but not really flattering to her figure.

The thing that I have noticed about LaToya is that she seems to rely on her training too much. She seems to be thinking a lot about the technical aspects of singing but very little about the performance aspect of the show. Her voice is great, by far the best of the 12. She suffers from being introverted and to be a really good performer, she needs to overcome that while she is on stage. Even though she did very good last night, she may in fact be the one to leave. Jasmine did not do well, but her tears will probably give her more votes than she would have otherwise received.

nyny523 .. I do not like Fantasia's voice at all. If it were not for her ability to perform, I would always rank her last. Last night, I actually thought that Fantasia and Diana were pretty close. In fact, had Fantasia sang better on the latter half of the second song I probably would have had her first (and I don't like her). Diana has definitely grown during the competition (perhaps in more ways than one ). Each of the past three weeks, I think that she has nailed the genre dead on. To me, that is what the show is about and that is why I have ranked her first in each of the last three weeks.

OK, of all the performers, Diana did the best [her second song, "Enough is Enough" was just great. It's not easy to do justice to a song by D. Summer AND Barbara Streisand! She did it. She had her best performance of the competition last night.

Jasmine, unfortunately, did the worst. Simon was a little harsh. He just could have handled himself a little better. Obviously he thought so too, as Randy said Simon apologized. I think Jasmine's tears were a combination of knowing she didn't do well and sheer exhaustion. I noticed after her second song, her smile seemed forced. She has a beautiful smile and I noticed a difference in it.

LaToya was LaToya. You know week after week you're going to get a good performance out of her, but she has no personality.

Which brings me to Fantasia. She has personality. She brings it every week. She doesn't just stand on stage and perform like a monkey. She takes chances. AND she can sing.

I know a lot of people think she's whiney, throws out too many comments, isn't humble, etc. But if you compare the styles between the top 3, Fantasia will grow and change with the times (a la Madonna). The other 2 will be typecast "Pop Stars" throughout their careers. Popstars fade after a while. Remember all the female singers in the early 90's. Where's Allanis Morrisette, Natalie Imbrulia, Jewel, etc. today? Fantasia is comfortable at all times. She is not rude. What's the problem?

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

My vote goes to Fantasia, with Diana maybe surpassing LaToya if Diana continues to improve.

Fantasia all the way!! woo hoo!

I can't get over Diana's cheesiness, but I do have to admit that she did very well last night.

I felt sorry for Jasmine too, after she broke down and cried, but I can't stand that EVERY song she sings is "pitchy" Her first song was just awful and painful to sit through. Week after week, I've thought she's blown it. She needs to work on her pitch, once she gets that under control, I think she'll be great.

LaToya has a great voice but Fantasia is the only one I'd pay money to see live.

So what is the deal with Fantasia's song choices? Does she think she can just pick any song, regardless of the nights theme. Last week she tried to pass off Queen as big band, now she is taking a R&B song from the 60's ( Knock on Wood ) and a 80's pop song from the Footloose soundtrack ( Holding on for a hero). If it is disco night, do a disco song, if it is big band night, do a big band song.

My picks based on last night:

Dianna - don't really like her but she nailed it last night
LaToya - Two solid performances, but not as much spart as will be needed to win
Fantasia - Horrible, I hope she goes, but at least she was in tune.
Jasmine - The dress was hot, I really like her but she stunk it up last night.

I have been a LaToya backer from the get-go but didn't even bother to vote last night for her. I love her voice and her performances are always polished and technically outstanding but there seems to be nothing there personality-wise so I suppose I have lost interest. I like Fantasia okay and she has done herself a favor by ditching the "attitude" in the last few weeks. I think Jasmine did better earlier in the competition but has gone steadily downhill. But, now, Diana, you have to admit that girl can sing. I've enjoyed her performances from the beginning and, of all the group, I think she has shown the most growth. As for the "cheesiness", she's only 16, is a southern girl and has good manners, give her a break. I think Jasmine will go tonight.

Jasmine's tears probably had her fans voting for her in full force last night. Don't be surprised if Fantasia gets voted out.

Actually, Knock on Wood was a huge disco hit for Amii Stewart. It was a remake of course, but would qualify as disco. But, you are right, Fantasia has really stretched the boundaries of what the genres really include. That said, she was great on Knock on Wood and very good with Hero ( I have always, by the way, hated, hated, hated that song ). It is kind of funny, on the HBO first look at Shrek 2, the fairy godmother also sings Hero and it also was just good.

Diana was really, really good on both her songs and Latoya was fantastic on her second song, she was just OK on her first one.

Jasmine, beautiful girl, no chance.

J

Best Diana description I've heard.

I can't stand Macy Gray but still thinks Fantasia should win. There's just something about her that shines through. A bit of attitude, a lot of feeling in the performance, a connection with the audience; she's different.

Diana is way too "cookie cutter" for my taste and LaToya is vocally great, but performance-challenged.

oh, and give Jasmine a few years and she could be great (but maybe still in the "cookie cutter performance" category, though).

My Ranking from last night:

Fantasia
Diana
LaToya (previously my fav)
Jasmine (horrible)

Diana never impressed me until last night and I think she did really well. LaToya was good but she just seemed so bleh. I saw The Tonight Show last night and it had Clay Aiken doing Solitare on it. Now that was a performance with power AND personality. The only one that has the personality this season seems to be Fantasia. Voice isn't everything.
