30 - Second Skip with HDTV Tivo

Can anyone confirm that the 30-second skip feature can be turned on in the HDTV Tivo? I've done this with the regular definition Tivo, but I am looking to upgrade to HD.

Thanks,

Mark

Yes it can. Same procedure as previous Tivos and DirecTivos.

While watching a recording, press "Select" "Play" "Select" "3" "0" "Select" on your remote.

Is there a shortcut for this?

I am trying to convince my wife to go from a Replay to the HDTivo. We both love the "greatest thing since sliced bread" commercial skip feature, and cannot even imagine watching TV without it. While trying to convince her everything would be alright I mentioned that at least Tivo had a 30-second skip button.

Now I *knew* there was not a real 30s skip button, but I always believed there was a hack (or secret code) that would enable it.

Almost every night we stop watching TV downstairs and continue watching the same show upstairs. She'll be pissed when I tell her I spent $1000 on a box that can't share shows, so I am really hoping that at least 30s skip is available. As for show sharing, I am going to secretly record everything twice.

No need. You enter the SPS30S sequence once, and the feature is enabled. Then you press the skip-to-end button (looks like an arrow hitting a wall: ->| ) when you want to skip forward 30 seconds. The feature stays enabled until the recorder reboots (e.g. power failure, software upgrade, etc.).

Most commercial breaks require 4-5 presses of the ->| button. If you overshoot, you can press the 8-second-rewind button (looks like an arrow going in a counter-clockwise circle) once or twice to get within a second or two of the commercial's end.

Perfect. My original Replay years ago had 30s skip, and although commercial advance is incredible, I think I can live with 30s skip. I assume this will also work with programmable remotes (I have a Sony but am eyeing a Harmony)

Exactly .... it's a toggle thing. You enter the SPS30S sequence to enable the 30-sec skip, enter it again to turn it off. If your Tivo loses power and reboots you also have to re-enter it again. Yet another good reason to power your Tivo with an uninterruptable power supply (UPS).

It doesn't matter what remote is used, you are telling the TiVo to react differently to that button.

As for watching in another room, just send the signal to the other TV.

Make it a macro

I realized that 1) I would never remember this sequence and 2) sometimes I like the button to go to the end SO

on my MX700, I made a macro with those button pushes.

I hit the button with the macro and I can easily switch back and forth from 30 second skip to normal end of show operation.

Joe Q,

You realize if you just press fastforward once and then 30 second skip button it will advance forward a tick at a time so you can go right to the end. Likewise, if you hit the reverse button once and then the 30 second skip it goes back a tick at a time to get to the beginning quick.

As mentioned before, a $30 UPS keeps it from ever loosing power so you don't have to reset the 30 second skip, alphabetical show listings, etc.

VideoPete,

Long time no talk. Welcome to the dark side....

Seriously, though, TiVo has so many features that ReplayTV doesn't you will wonder how you EVER got along without 2 tuners or a Season Pass Manager.

I am seriously looking forward to the "two tuners". I really do not understand the advantage of Season pass, but I do hear good things about it. Not to mention the "to-do" list. I am sure I will miss commercial skip, as it has always worked great for me.

I am still trying to get a DirecTV installer that can sell (preorder) the HDTivo, and wire the house correctly in anticipation for the new babies (with free installation, of course). As soon as I find one I'm a go. My new plasma shows up this week! No more black-and-white TV for me!

If I program this button this way to do the 30 second skip, can I still use the button to jump forward during fast forwarding and rewinding? If I press fast forward or rewind and then press the jump ahead button (->|) it moves forward or backward exactly 15 minutes, which is great. Will I lose this feature if I program it to do a 30 second skip?

No. The feature is the same when you have first pressed fast forward or reverse. If you are just watching, the button will give you a 30 sec skip. I think it is very cool. To skip commercials on most evening programs, you hit the button 6 or 8 times. If you are little off, you can use the 8 sec replay button to backup a bit.

A "tick" is one of the white lines ("tick marks") on the time scale that appears at the bottom of the screen when you pause, fast-forward, or fast-rewind. They're usually 15-minute markers on the time scale.

Since the remote is sending the same "advance-to-end" command as before (and the TiVo just interprets it differently now), any remote that can send the standard TiVo "advance" code will work. Works fine on my RS 15-1994

I switched from Replay to Tivo years ago and was concerned about the lack of the 30 sec skip button... soon to discover that the fast forward feature on Tivo has a nice reaction time feature that lets you zoom forward and as soon as you see program hit play and it backs up slightly. I find this much faster and easier than the multiple skip presses that invariably ended up overshooting and requiring jumping back. Plus you can see everything as it goes by which is great for short attention spans :-)

I found this message while searching. Instead of recording things twice, install a video network; you can watch any device (DVR, VCR, etc.) from any TV in your house.
