Evansville Locals Any Time This Decade?

I've been champing at the bit to get the Evansville locals. I absolutely cannot find anything pertaining to them except what's on the D* web site; that's been no help 'cuz it says "Coming in 2004...Equipment to be determined soon." Their site has stated that for months. I'd've thought with the launch of 7S, that things would start to firm up.

I just wish that my area will show up on the "Coming in 200x" page.

It will probably be after all of my OTA locals go HD.

They are planned to go at the 72.5 slot which would require a second dish at least, possibly a new receiver (thus "equipment to be determined"). However, the FCC hasn't approved DirecTV's use of this slot yet.

Once 7S is all set, then 5 will be moved to 72.5 slot from 119. Assuming the FCC gives approval, then DirecTV can start putting up locals on that slot. I would not expect anything on this until fall.

Good news indeed. Can't believe I missed that one.

Holy Cow!! I hope a new receiver isn't in order, or would the HDVR2 work with a second dish for the 72.5 slot?

It's been discussed that a new reciever is most likely not going to be required. All recent directv receivers are firmware upgradable. So if anything all they'll have to do is upgrade the firmware on your box.

according to this article (on DirecTV's website):

DIRECTV to offer Local Channels in Wausau, Wisc.

quote:
Wausau will be among the more than 24 new markets that will receive local channels from DIRECTV following the relocation of the DIRECTV 5 satellite to the Telesat-controlled orbital slot at 72.5 degrees West longitude (WL). Once Federal Communications Commission approval is received for the relocation, DIRECTV will establish a timeline for the local channel market launch. Customers in those markets will require a second 18-inch dish to receive their local channels. The dish and installation will be provided at no charge.

Obviously, things could change, but I seriously doubt a new receiver would be needed.

IF and when they get 72.5 operational, and the required equipment into the field, DirecTV will be able to serve about 135 DMAs. That leaves about 75 DMAs, representing about 400 channels. While I can't guarantee this, I am relatively sure that when DirecTV-9S is launched late in 2005, you will see DirecTV serving all 210 DMAs.
