I just got a sony reciever, STR-DE597, and i tried to get the tivo remote to work the recievers mute and volume controls. I went threw all the codes it had for sony twice and none of them worked. Is there something else i can do?

Check your Sony Receiver manual. Newer Sony receivers have two different IR Remote code sets. On mine they're called "AV System 1" and "AV System 2". I think it's "AV System 1" that works with the Tivo remotes, but it's been a long time since I set up mine.

If you change to AV1 mode, which you have to if you want the tivo remote to control your receiver, you'll lose the use of the sony's own remote, it is stuck on AV2 mode. So you will have to make a choice. see this thread, for guidance.
