Unhappy Drive A failing, newbie, please help

I have a Hughes DirecTV DVR40. I added a 160GB B drive a few months ago. I'm experiencing freezes and/or reboots to the Welcome screen.

PowerMax believes the original 40GB Maxtor drive is failing. The SMART test fails and bad blocks are found. I've allowed PowerMax to correct the errors and this resolved things on the Tivo for about a week, but now I'm getting identical problems.

So...

How do I go about replacing the A drive? I can certainly pick up a new 40+GB drive, but what should I do with it and the original to get things back up and running?

Thanks!

Just follow the instructions in the Hinsdale or Weaknees thread at the top of this Forum.

Even if the disk is a bit wonky, you should be able to make a viable compressed backup. If you want to salvage your recordings, a faulty drive can interfere with that, but there's a good chance you can use dd to clone the recordings on to a new disk (MFS Tools doesn't cope well with bad blocks).
