Post Trickplay during playback from VCR

I own a DirecTivo and am asking this question for a friend who is considering a SA Tivo:

On a standalone Tivo, can you play a tape from a VCR and use the trick play features (i.e., rewind, replay, etc.)?

Thanks.

Yes, if you are watching the VCR output (tape or tuner source) through your tiVo, you can use the trick-play features on the 30-minute buffer. You can also record the whole tape on a TiVo. Once recorded, you can play it back like any TiVo recording.

What an odd coincidence. I was telling a co-worker about my TiVo and he asked exactly the opposite question.

He wanted to know if the save-to-VCR function would allow you to skip the commercials. i.e. could you ff the tivo or pause the vcr when saving to tape.

I told him I didn't know becasue I haven't used my VCR since I installed TiVo. But what's the answer to his question? I suspect you could, right?

If I have nothing better to do, then I remove the commercials from shows while laying them the VHS. I pause the VCR, FF thru the commercials on TiVo, jump back 8 seconds, and clear the Status bar. Then I hit record on the VHS.

Wish you could mark in/out points on recordings on TiVo as a backdoor. You have to watch all the commercials once to do it, so this doesn't threaten advertisers. And it would allow us to lay down commercial-free episodes to tape, or cut out a small segment of an hour long show we want to save.

If you use the save to VCR function then NO as the controls are locked. If you just hit record on your VCR and play on the TiVo followed by normal FF commands and such, then yes.

Me too. I even mapped the VCR pause to an unused button on the "TiVo mode" of my universal remote, just to make this easier. I've been using it a lot lately, as NBC is rerunning the first season of SCTV after Conan O'Brien. I've been waiting for an official DVD (even VHS!) of SCTV for years, but at least I can have something now.
