Lightbulb IR Remote Modification

Hello, I wanted to pass this tip along in case anyone else has the same problem.

My problem was that I had to be within about a 30 degree angle to the front of the Sony SVR2000 to get the remote to work. The way my furniture is organized, this prevents me from using the remote while sitting at the dinner table. Bummer. I tried fresh batteries but no improvement.

Then I remembered reading here about how to remove the front cover. I popped that sucker off and the remote worked perfectly from all angles.

After examining the inside of the front cover, I noticed the window through which the IR passes is pretty narrow. I dragged out the Dremel tool with a routing bit and carefully elongated the sides of the window from the inside without damaging or scratching the outer dark plastic.

Result: Works perfect from a wider angle. I can now eat and skip commercials without having to get up and stand in front of the TiVo to hit FF.

Notes: Be careful with the tool, the plastic tends to gum up and stick to the tool when heated so don't stay in any one spot for too long. A sharp hobby knife is useful for final clean-up. I don't know if this trick is applicable to other TiVo makes/models.

Cheers!
