Angry Random channel changes during reecording

Ok - this is really frustrating - on about three separate occasions now, my TiVo has changed the channel in the middle of a recording. When I play the show back the program changes exactly on the half hour without stopping the recording. I don't know if this helps, but it only seems to happen on the weekend (Sat or Sun) around 9:30PM. I know it is not the DSS remote being accidentally pressed because I do not have one (I got the DSS from a friend) and it always changes to the same channel (PAX-TV). It is a 30 hour upgraded with 2 IBM Deskstar 76.8GB drives running 2.0.1-001-000. I have it hooked up via serial to a DSS receiver and IR blaster to a cable box. I did the upgrade myself and have been running for over two months without any other problems. The only other issue is excruciating slowness accessing the guide data at times, but I have been attributing that to the fact that I have 2 channel lineups (DirectTV and Cable)

Is it the cable box or the dtv the tivo is recording when the change occurs? If its the cable box another ir source could possibly be your problem..

Nope - it was recording from the DSS and switched to another DSS channel on all occasions.

Maybe God wants you to watch Pax TV .. after all Pat Robertson prayed for that Hurricane to turn aside and it did - although it did turn and go through downtown Charleston instead...

seriously - how many possible IR codes are there? Is it possible that anoth device has a matching code?

Funny you should mention that - it was always some sort of bible story that it changed to... Anyway - It is highly unlikey that it was another remote, because no one was at home on any of the 3 occasions it happened. Here are a few more interesting observations:

  • The channel change always occurs exacly in the middle of the recording (twice at 0:30 in a 1 hour show, another time at 1:00 in a 2 hour show)
  • The most recent occurrance switched in the middle of a 2 hour show (the progress bar displays a 2 hour range), but the recorded (green) portion in the bar ended before the 2 hours were up (30 minutes were missing off the end), indicating that after the channel change at 1 hour in, it only recorded another 30 minutes and stopped. This 30 minues just happened to correspond to the end of the program that was on the channel it changed to...
  • The recorder never had this problem (been running for about 7 months) before I got the DSS and began using 2 inputs (DSS & Cable)

This is really weird. If it happens again, I'll check if all the above circumstances are true and if I can spot some additional ones.

P.S. I don't have any kids or pets that might have been playing with the DSS remote, which I do not have in the first place. Also, all the weirdness has been with DSS-recorded channels...

After it changes, what channel does the on screen Tivo guide say it is on? Pax or the original channel?

Does your DSS box have VCR timers? Could you have accidently programmed a daily VCR timer for this time and channel? It would cause this problem.

You could also disconnect the serial cable around the time it normally happens and if it still switches channels, then you know the problem is with the receiver not the Tivo.

The on-screen guide never appears - only the DSS on-screen channel info shows up...

Awesome suggestion - I had no idea this feature even existed - I suspect this may be it, especially since it is a used DSS that I got from a friend...

This may be difficult because it is so intermittent. I think mishagray may have hit the nail on the head, so I will check out the DSS settings this evening and post my results...

Thanks everyone!

Bingo! Two timers set, both for PAX, one at 9:30PM on Saturdays. Both cleared now, so shouldn't be a problem anymore. Thanks mucho!
