Question Ex Videotron / CandW now NTL w/ Jerrold Impulse!

Tivo only comes up with NTL Westminster under my postcode.

This works, and indeed controls my cable box (A Jerrold Impulse) but is useless due to having the wrong channel lineup. Have tried a multitude of London Postcodes but to no avail. Have now set up Tivo as Aerial only whilst waiting for a callback from Tivo and have now been waiting 4 days.

I believe the problem stems from the fact that NTL have only recently taken over my Cable and Wireless (formerly Videotron) franchise.

On calling Tivo I was told that there is actually a "Known Problem" with boxes bearing the name "Jerrold Impulse".

As the Jerrold/General Instrument box is the de facto standard cable box in the UK I can only presume the problem is a channel lineup problem with this series of box. From what I can tell, Tivo have taken the channel lineup details for the differing postcodes from NTL hq who are clearly unaware of these franchise takeovers.

The NTL website seems to bear this out and describes the former Cable and Wireless franchise and it's NTL parent company as:

"Running as a separate companies for some time".

Below is a section from NTL's FAQ:

******

Television services (analogue):

I see that Cable & Wireless offers a choice of six television packs, instead of four. Will you be increasing the number of packs when they're part of ntl?

No. We won't be changing our services as the two companies will continue to run separately for some time. However, we're already looking at how we can get the best out of the two television line-ups to the benefit of all our customers.

What about the prices of the different television packs? Will these change?

No. We have no intention of changing prices as the two companies will continue to run separately for some time.

I know that the TV channel line-up is different in ntl compared to Cable & Wireless. Will you be changing the line up to match Cable & Wireless?

No. We won't be changing the line-up as the two companies will continue to run as separate companies for some time.

******

My Postcode is London SE17. Have lived in 3 houses in South London within a 10 mile radius of differing postcodes all with the same lineup of channels and provider (now in it's third incarnation) which has not changed since the mid nineties. All of those postcodes also come up as NTL Westminster which is the wrong lineup.

Huge (and I do mean huge) areas of London are covered by this NTL formerly Cable and Wireless formerly Videotron(!) franchise, does anyone have a postcode for this provider and the lineup listed below?

Channel numbers (all of them) from the box are as follows:

1: FILM4
2: BOX
3: SCIFI
4: PARL
5: Guide
6: SKYN
7: ANML
8: FXNG
11: SKY1
12: EURO
13: TNTC
14: SS1
15: SS3
16: DISC
17: PREM
18: CNN
19: SMAX
20: MTV
21: SS2
22: NKPC
23: QVC
24: TV5
25: GRA
26: DISNEY
27: ZEE
28: PBOY
29: CINE
31: LIVING
33: TVX
34: VH1
38: UKGOLD
39: ITV2
40: CH4
42: CH5
44: ITV
46: BBC2
48: BBC1
49: NEWS24
50: GUIDE
51: FR51
52: FR52
53: FR53
56: STYLE
57: CCFN
58: CHALLENGE
59: UKHZ
60: PPV
61: LOCAL
72: TVE
73: HIST
74: SHOP

In cases such as this (I know several people with the same problem), can Tivo create a Dummy postcode for this channel lineup and cable box and provide it to the customer when they call with a Postcode problem?

Help!

Sean.

Yet another victim of analogue cable lineup problems

I reported my problem with telewest lineup, who have not been taken over by anybody and have had the same channel lineup for quite a while, 3 weeks ago and still no fix. Tivo support assure me it is being worked on and I have asked why it has taken so long for something that should be just a data update, it's not like they have change the code.

Waiting for a response patiently.

Stuart

Red face

It's a difficult one, as if I wait 3 weeks to find out nothings going to happen my satisfaction period within which I can return the unit will have expired leaving me with a £400 bookend..

I am also loathed to subscribe as yet in case it's wasted money also.

The machine IS fantastic and I am very impressed with what it does. The reason for having it though was to trawl the Cable channels for stuff I always miss which at the moment I can't do and no one is calling me back..

Sean - that cable lineup is (strangely) identical to the ex-Videotron ex-Cable & Wireless now-NTL lineup in use in Southampton. Try the postcode SO19 and select the SECOND option it gives you for NTL Cable. (It lists two, for some reason.)

Thumbs down

Big Noise,

SO10 postcode worked great, cable lineup was correct all bar the terrestrial channels which are unfortunately situated on different numbers to your own...!

What's so frustrating is that it works perfectly. Chose GI (instead of Jerrold which I have) as the cable box, no problem changing channels using the built in blaster, a perfectly working Tivo with cable channels in the correct place but no Terrestrial channels on the correct channel number (see above). Gone back to Aerial only and have now waited 10 days for Tivo support to phone me back.

If only there was an option to shuffle the placing of the channels to match the database lineup.

I love this product, I wish they'd sort it out.

Oh, and ring me back..

Sean

Try picking an SE6 postcode. I have the same channel layout as you, but mine (SE10) is not recognised, but SE6 does the trick.

It gets BBC etc. correct (48,46,44,40,42) The only incorrect channel I'm aware of is the SCIFI one which seems to think it is on 2 and not 3.

Thanks for that, now have an almost correct lineup!

I have only JUST had a message left today from Tivo Support..

They say the're returning my message from 'a couple of days ago'

I originally called on the 4th of November.

And again on November 13th.

It is now the 1st of December.

Without this forum I would still have a Silver bookend, thanks for the replies.

Sean.
