Cool Expert opinion, please?

Hello geniuses of the TiVi world! In your opinion, what is the best hard drive to buy (largest capacity and best price) for upgrading my Phillips 14 hour TiVo. If anyone has any tips or rebate info for an online place, please let me know. Thanks a million.

Also, have you enjoyed your TiVo more since upgrading? I'll bet it's so nice to be able to program more things and not have to worry about your shows getting deleted before you have a chance to watch them, huh? Also, the ability to record at a better resolution is convenient. Any comments helpful.

What method do you recommend? Should I download the Dylan's Bootdisk and BlessTiVo program or is there another way that may be easier?

Thanks for the input. I don't know how I survived without my TiVo!

P.S. Does anyone know when we will be getting the software upgrade that allows you to enter an actor's name in for TiVo to search and even automatically record shows that you specify by actor name?

Sorry so long,
Mikey

The hack faq lists several, all equally good. My personal choice was the WD caviar, but only because I could get a good price on one.

All that is true. After the upgrade, I wouldn't consider trying to use a 14 hour machine again. I don't know how I put up with it for a whole year. I did a relatively modest upgrade 14->52), but that corresponds to more hours at best quality that I originally had at basic! Using High for everything I have about 25 hours to play with, and that's ideal for me. Sock away a couple movies for later, save a couple episodes of good shows to watch them at one sitting, and still have room for lots of suggestions. Life is good.

The bootdisk is your friend. Trust the bootdisk.

That's the million dollar question. Based on what I've seen here on AVS, I'm guessing the end of October at the earliest. Any later and they'd be doing upgrades too close to the Christmas rush, any earlier and you contradict hints Richard Bullwinkle has dropped, generally not a good betting position. PV

For some information on hard drives, you might check out the following post:
Hard drives online - here is some information

I think if your looking for high-capacity at a reasonable price, you should look at the Maxtor 60 GB.

Note that the thread is old, so a lot of the deals and/or rebate information posted will also be dated. Hopefully, if anyone knows anything, they will let you know.

I haven't upgraded a TiVo yet, but from owning a 14 and a 30 hour unit, I can say that space makes a big difference.

IMO, downloading Dylan's Bootdisk and the making a printout of the Hacking the TiVo FAQ is the best course of action.

I'm fairly certain that 2.0 will allow you to do such things as search for actor's names. For one, they have a "Wish List" that should do something like that. Time will tell (since Otto can't ).
