copy video

I thought I would connect output of video camera to input of cable box. Then record via channel three. Would this give me monitor capability? We'll see.

mdlp, I got a digital video camera for Christmas and made a short home video. The camera has a composite output, so I first copied the video to a VCR. Then I copied from the VCR to Tivo using an RF cable and channel 3. For a home video this seems to be working O.K., and I can monitor the material.

I assume there is some loss of picture quality, but it is still good enough for my purposes. I do not have a cable box so could not try your suggestion.

How did your experiment turn out?

Play back was by way of what's showing. All came out just fine. One limitation, not experienced, may be the default stop in the recording time alloted for the particular recording session the set-up is mimicking. But not to worry here. A manual setting of the recording time should solve that.

Marshall, when you say RCA-to-Coax, what do you mean exactly? The only cable (for transfer to TV) that came with my camera has a composite ending (that is the reason I copied the material to my VCR first). What do you use to convert a composite ending into a coax ending?

By the way, if you copy several things and need an index, in the following thread I suggest a way to do this. I also discussed the manual recording feature to keep the recording from stopping too soon.

Howdy Jim:
What I mean is that I have this cable that has RCA composite on one end (left, right, video) and a coax connector on the other end. My TIVO unit has composite input as well. I am currently hooked up such that RCA out of the VCR goes into TIVO. Haven't tried that yet. Got that from you a few threads ago.
