Simple consumer-grade A/V distros (both S-video and composite) are nothing more than some apropriate jacks connected together with op-amp buffers. Since high quality op-amp chips are available for under a buck, there is really no reason for anyone to build an electronically 'crappy' model. The biggest difference between distros is going to be the box, the quality of the connectors, and the label on the front. Expect to pay 50-100 bucks more if you want one that has a regular internal power supply rather than a wall-wart.
