Talking Cable in the Classroom

I've only had my tivo a month or so but i've already stumbled upon a neat tip. if this is widely known, forgive me...

Cable in the Classroom is a program where cable companies partner with stations to run "educational programs" commercial free in the wee hours of the morning so educators can record the programs for use in the classroom.

why do we care, you ask? well, something like this seems perfect for tivo owners! great way to record some new stuff in the off-peak hours that's all COMMERCIAL FREE. You don't even need to skip through them as they've already been edited out.

And you can learn something, too . seriously tho, there's some cool stuff to be found in this program. i discovered it by recording an early am episode of Good Eats on Food Network. There's everything from MTV to A&E.

For a full slate of CITC programs, hit the web site...

hope you find this useful.

Thanks for the link. I think I'll have to throw some of these programs into the TiVo soon...

Re: Cable in the Classroom

Exactly! That’s why I bought my TiVo---Not to have 30 episodes of The Simpsons, but to rather watch a film pertaining to Mitosis. (joking) Seriously though-I wish TiVo could show commercial-free programs in the program description. Like next to the closed captioning icon "CC" there could be something like “CF” standing for commercial free. Also, maybe you could create a wishlist for commercial-free shows and find ones which interest you. (i.e. – “9/11” on CBS a while back)

Any bets on whether Infomercials would be marked "CF"?

Well, maybe to go a step further TiVo could ignore all shows under the show title of “Paid Programming”.

I caught on to this a while back when I recorded "Good Eats" at 12:30 AM and noticed that there were no commercials. So cool! Thanks for the link.

TiVo already flags them as "Class" in the data, but that's not a searchable catagory. (Also seen "In Prog" for shows scheduled to be joined in progress, zahwha?)

However, Cable in the Classroom episodes aren't always better. I've seen a great books episode on "War of the Worlds" appear as Cable in the Classroom content (coupled with one on "1984"). I thought though that something was missing, so I checked my older tape of it. Turned out the "War of the Worlds" segment was a 30 minute commercial-free version with added educational package material derived from the original 1 hour with commercials version.

I've long enjoyed the Twilight Zone CIC episodes. Immensely educational.
