tivo and c-band

hi,
I currently own a sony SA 2000 unit,I've upgraded it,and it has a lifetime subscription.

Now with that said: I have just aquired a c-band 10 foot dish system,I want to put the tivo on it and use it like a dvr,I realise I will have to downgrade the os from 3.0 to somewhere around 1.3,has anyone done something like this before?

thank you

TTB

The signal from the BUD is just like any other signal. You have to set timers on both just like a VCR.

Look through the archives in the 4DTV group at http://www.delphiforums.com or http://www.satforums.com

But there really isn't that much to say.

As far as downgrading, I assume you mean to avoid paying Tivo monthly fees, but you say you have a lifetime sub. Why do you think you need to downgrade?

You have lifetime sub, so you don't need to drop the subscription, so you'll always be able to manually record without nag screens (assuming you still have a phone line?).

Manual recordings is what you'll probably have to do with the BUD, and you'll have to set the receiver to the correct satellite and channel before each recording, because TiVo has no guide data or IR control of the BUD.

You could experiment to pick a fake cable or Dish/DTV lineup that has some of the channels you are interested in, at the correct time zones, so you can use TiVo to find stuff and maybe even record at the right time with a current program description. Then Season Passes might work. Someone else with a BUD in your area might be able to point you to the right lineup.

Check the archives in the Underground forum on this very board... there was at least one other user that had (fairly extensively) hacked his system to get it to work with C-band, or at least tried to. I don't remember if he was entirely successful or not, but take a look over there.

Also try doing searches here, on Google Groups, and on your favorite Web search engine for TiVo users in Canada. I don't have URLs or know the details, but I've heard that some have hacked in the ability to load non-TiVo guide data. A similar approach should work for C band, provided you can get a source of guide data.

I have a TiVO with a C-Band Satellite system. I setup TiVO for DirectTV and manually set the VCR timer on my satellite receiver. For shows that are on daily or weekly, I set a re-occurring timer.

I also review the To Do List every day, and set up a single event timer to catch those shows I am interested in.

Wild Feeds take a little more work. Besides manually programing the satellite receiver, you must manually set the time for TiVO to record. The big inconvenience is you do not get the real name of the show you are recording, but the program on the 'fake' channel you select.

Although not as convenient as having CATV or a Small Dish system, it certainly is workable.

Satellite Forums' Projects Forum has an active discussion about a widget interface for controlling a 4Dtv receiver with either a TiVo or ReplayTV.
