Directv Tivo Questions

I currently have a series 2 SA and a series 1 SA each on their own TV with digital cable on both. I am contemplating getting Directv with Tivo units instead. I would like the dual tuner Directv unit on my main TV plus I hope the live TV channel changing is better with DirectTV units. I found a deal from American Satellite where I get the dish, a Phillips DSR6000R for my main room and a standard DirectTV reciever for my bedroom where I can keep one of my SA TIVOS to use with that. The deal also includes a Multi Switch and Installation for $199...is this a good deal or worth it? I read lots of mixed reviews here on the Phillips DSR6000R and also mixed feelings on American Satellite. I can also get same deal for $299 with Sony unit. Any other concerns I should have with DirectTV...I have never been very impressed by my Time Warner Digital Cable anyhow. Is the picture going to be better or same or worse or what? Any info to help is appreciated.

I'd recommend getting two DirecTiVos. The setup you describe will cost you $18/month in TiVo fees ($13/month for the SA TiVo and $5/month for the DirecTiVo). Using two DirecTiVos will cost just $5/month in TiVo fees. That savings will pay for the second DirecTiVo (at $200) in 16 months; and it'll pay for the difference between the DirecTiVo and a standard DirecTV receiver in less time than this. You'll also get the benefits of the DirecTiVo, such as dual tuners and better picture quality.

Of course, this assumes you're paying monthly for your SA TiVos. If not, then the monthly costs may not favor the DirecTiVo, but you'll get back a big hunk of change by selling the lifetime-subscribed SA units on eBay.

You should also check the DirecTV with TiVo forum for information on where to find DirecTiVos. Even if you can't get two Series 1 DirecTiVos from American, you'll be able to get one directly from DirecTV for $200 after you subscribe; or you can wait for a Series 2 unit (due out Real Soon Now), again at $200 (from Circuit City).

You could sell your SA and pay for a second DirecTV receiver.

Picture and sound much better IMHO. Interface, infinately better

Concerns with DTV,
*Making sure you have a shot at the sky
*"you get locals
*mirror fees (5.99 per additional receiver)
