What can I say??

Many many thanks for the replies. I was expecting a bit of flaming for being off topic, but have instead found your views and comments very interesting.

I'm off to buy this month's Home Cinema Choice!

I definately won't buy an idtv now, and didn't realise that Nicam was pretty much standard. I may not bother with Dolby, as I could add that later, though the infra red speakers sound great.

Thanks again - what a great forum!

Be warned, buying from Unbeatable could be a very frustrating experience.

I ordered a Sony Grand Wega TV from them on 27th December at what I must admit is a very good price but their customer service is appalling and delivery times even worse. I finally received my TV on the 15th March (11 weeks after ordering) minus it's stand which they still cannot give me a date of when that will be delivered!

When ordering the set I was told I would receive it in a few days, DON'T belive them, once the order was placed delivery times kept slipping and when I contacted them about it I was treated as if I was a nuisance, not what you want when you are spending £5300 with a company!

Good prices, poor service!

Of course, this is just my experience with this company, yours may be different.

Unbeatable obviously don't keep stock of the more expensive TVs - they order them on demand, and if there are people ahead of you in the queue, then you could be in for a long wait! (Sony UK don't give these stores preferential treatment - in fact, some say the opposite because of the huge discounts they offer tempts people away from official Sony dealers... though that may be paranoia again). In fact, for the really expensive stuff, Sony will only import so many into the UK and then share them out amongst dealers. This can mean a very long wait indeed. It's a balancing act - go to a shop, pay full price and get the TV there and then, or save a small fortune and wait 2 months! (though I bet there aren't many Grand Wega TVs sat in the Dixons/Comet warehouses!).

Still, I know of people who have bought from unbeatable and, apart from the wait, have no complaints about service.

If you go somewhere where they have a good range of magazines there are a couple of 'awards' issues knocking about at the moment. I don't remember which titles, but these can be quite useful

Now even more off topic...

I've got an OnDigital STB which I own. It is far too black, and not nearly silver enough. Consequently I would like to get hold of a new one. The problem is, you can't actually buy STB's anywhere since they are sort of 'free' nowadays. So, does anyone know places that might sell the STBs outright? Or should I just buy a pre-paid in the shop with cash and give a false address

1. Continuing the OT Widescreen iDTV thing...

I currently have a normal TV and am thinking of upgrading to a widescreen (still debating iDTV point)...only thing that concerns me is that with my current setup I am happy with Basic quality recording (except for sport/action programmes). Will I still feel this way if I upgrade or in doing so, will I feel the need to go for medium or high (and thereby significantly reduce available recording time)?...

2. Chimaera,

Does the go in and buy a pre-paid (with cash & false address) routine actually work? I am keen to get a second box for those times when TiVo ties up my existing one and I want to watch something else (usually on the free to air channels) - not sure I want to subscribe twice though....

Well... after switching from a 50Hz 4:3 set to a 16:9 100Hz set, I have noticed a lot more pixelation than before. Now I only use Best, whereas before I used High a lot, so I now have a lot less capacity (Gary, where did you get your single drive image from?). There are some reasons for this. Firstly, the old TV did not understand widescreen signals so I used to have the STB switched into letterbox mode. This meant that the STB was altering the picture to fit in the 4:3 frame, and the black stuff top and bottom was obviously static, so TiVo had less real picture information to encode. Second, for the same reason, I now have a much larger visible picture area. Lastly, 100Hz sets all do additional digital processing on the picture and when everything is working well, this is entirely transparent. However, it can highlight minor artefacts that you might not otherwise notice.

Dunno, I don't know if I would have the nerve to do it yet! I was hoping there might be a more honest alternative.
