Post Upgrading with Mac BlessTivo

A newbie here. I've looked over the "Hinsdale" how-to and have some questions:

  1. I am only adding a second drive at this time. Why do I need to remove the original drive?
  2. Can I do this with the Mac version of BlessTivo alone? If so, can anyone reassure me with a success story?

Thanks!

  1. You don't need to remove the original drive, but doing so is a good idea. Removing this drive lets you back it up, which means you'll have a fallback in case your upgrade fails or, at some point in the future, the hard disk fails completely -- you can restore the backup to a new drive and be back in business quickly. AFAIK, though, there's no Mac-based backup software for TiVos.
  2. I'm not very familiar with the Mac software, but my understanding is that you can run the Mac BlessTiVo on a new drive, install the drive, and be working quite quickly -- but without the benefit of a backup of the original system.

What unit are you looking to upgrade? With the mac, you can only do the bless and add a drive. Without the backup if something went wrong you wouldn't be able to restore your unit to a waorking state.
