- You don't need to remove the original drive, but doing so is a good idea. Removing this drive lets you back it up, which means you'll have a fallback in case your upgrade fails or, at some point in the future, the hard disk fails completely -- you can restore the backup to a new drive and be back in business quickly. AFAIK, though, there's no Mac-based backup software for TiVos.
- I'm not very familiar with the Mac software, but my understanding is that you can run the Mac BlessTiVo on a new drive, install the drive, and be working quite quickly -- but without the benefit of a backup of the original system.
