I am in the process of replacing an extremely noisy Western Digital 120gb drive with an extremely quiet Seagate 120gb drive (B drive in dsr704 DTivo). The WD is only a couple weeks old, but I have accumulated a lot of shows and movies.

I used: dd if=/dev/hdb of=/dev/hdd bs=1024k
My old drive on primary slave and new drive on secondary slave

It has been running for almost 15 hours now. I have seen posts where people have had times of up to a day.
My PC has a Duron 1.3Ghz chip.

How long should I wait before declaring it a failure?

I was told somtimes if you hold your breath and spin around 5 times the process would finnish quicker

That's just what I heard at work though.

I copied my 120GB drives last week. My A drive had errors, so I used the same line but with "conv=noerror, sync and bs=512 (not 512k, 512) and it took between 40-48 hours (was done when I got home from work), but it did finish and works great. My B drive was fine and that only took about 12 - 18 hours (was done when I got up in the morning), using the exact same line you used. Except in both cases I was copying secondary master to primary master. I have a Pentium 4, ~2.6 GHz (IIRC).

And yes, the Seagates are VERY quiet :-)

If there is no problem with the drive, and it's taking a lot longer than 30-40GB per hour (with bs=1024k), then you're not using the DMA mode. DMA mode is the default for MSTools2 CD.

I am indeed, using the 2.0 CD. I wonder why it didn't use DMA? It's still going at 36 hours now. @#$%^!!!

by the way, I tried spinning around 5 times, but ran out of breath on the 4th

I had a WD drive that chattered like crazy until I took it out, put it in a PC and ran the utility to turn on the accoustic management. After that it was as quiet as my MAXTOR. You might want to give that a try. The last time I did a dd on my drive it took about 20 hrs.
