If you have a Series 1 TiVo that originally came with software v.1.x, it can be used in "Dumb VCR" mode, in which it can be set to record by time and date, but will have none of the TiVo service features such as program data, program search, etc.

Other TiVos can do almost nothing w/o a subscription, any more than you can receive cable or DirecTV without subscriptions, unless you are a very clever and unprincipled thief.

I am kinda pissed.. I just bought a Philips DSR6000 and I cannot even record with it... I cant watch a movie and save it.. It only records what I am watching.. That is what is so upsetting.. $600 down the drain.. I thought I could at least use it like a dumb vcr..

1. I have asked the question several times about how to tell whether a Series 1 originally came with software v.1.x, and nobody has yet provided a definitive answer. However, it seems that most of them did, at least the 112's, 212's and 312's. The question becomes more important if you are buying a new unit. If you already have one, you might just go ahead and hook it up to a phone line and see what happens. I understand that TiVo will eventually download software version 2.5 or 3.0 (even w/o a subscription) and these should support "dumb VCR" functionality.

2. Both my DSR6000's have "REQUIRES DTV SUBSCRIPTION" plastered all over the box, as well as on all advertising and both the Philips and TiVo web sites, not to mention a gazillion or so posts on the subject in this Forum. Hard to see how someone could have missed it.

The good news is that DTiVo subscriptions will soon cost just $5/mo. which will make them an even better bargain than they are now at $10. If you are not already familiar with the service, give it a try. 99% of the people who do wouldn't dream of giving it up!

I get the feeling this wasn't a well understood purchase!
Were you aware that the DSR6000 was strictly for use with DirecTV?

Funny. Orbitsat has them for sale for nowhere near $600. $330 gets you a Sony T-60 if you've got an existing DirecTV subscription...

$199 gets you one at Amazon.com (but I'm not sure if it's a new subscriber only thing). Either way, a little research would've led you the right way.

BTW, the way to get free service is to sell your TiVo, and buy a ReplayTV.

Because I'm glad that I only paid $99 each for the three I own. It wasn't a negative comment towards you. I was just noting how much the price had gone up because of demand. New subscribers can still get them for $99 some places, or so I've heard.

Who's being stupid here? I can use my units! (I'm editing one of my wishlists on one of my units right now.) You are saying you spent more than most others and you can't even use it.

Perhaps my previous post came across as too negative. I really didn't mean anything by it. Maybe I should have been more thoughtful and less hasty to click SUBMIT. It's just that you are the first person that I've heard of that spent THAT MUCH on a DSR6000 as opposed to a SAT-T60 which usually is $100 more. Everyone else is in the $250-$350 range unless it's a previously upgraded unit.

You have a few options. Get a dumb VCR. Get a Replay for the dumb VCR mode. Spend another $9.95 per month (soon to be half that amount or less) for a subscription. Find a way to hack it so you don't have to pay.
It would be "stupid" to ask all of us happy paying customers on a TiVo supported forum how to steal TiVo's service. (Hint-Hint)
That's like walking up to a line of people and asking them to help you cut in front because you don't want to wait.

I really think you'd be more than happy with your DSR6000 if you were to spend an extra $9.95 and try it. But I'm wondering, didn't you get to try it out for a few days when you first hooked it up? They used to be fully fuctional out of the box for a trial period of a few days while the account was processed.
Didn't you get a trial period? You really didn't give us much information to go on which is why you are getting some of the responses that you've gotten.

The new "improved" DTiVos that are scheduled to arrive in a few weeks will cost $200. If you don't want to use your unit, maybe you can get a tax writeoff by donating it to an electronics museum as "The most expensive DTiVo ever purchased."

Why do you have to hook to network if you have phone line connected. What is the connection between the Tivo company and your receiver. Does your receiver actually send data to Tivo company or do you just receive updates and put them on manually. I'm just confused on how all this works. I'm interested in setting up a tivo but just want to find out more about it.

the phone connection is to get updates, find out what's on tv, and to send some anonymous information back to tivo.
