Which to buy: 60 hr vs 80 hr

With the imminent release of the 80-hour TiVo, I note that stores such as Best Buy are already discounting the 60-hour units from $399 to $332 or even cheaper.

Problem: I wanna new Tivo.

Which to buy: 60-hour or 80-hour unit?

Pro 60-hour: Proven tech, many user responses re reliabilty, functions, etc.
Currently being discounted to clear the way for the new units.
Will eventually be updated to the new 3.2 software.

Con 60-hour With the 80-hour unit being offered on amazon.com for $399, the same amount as a 60-hour unit, why settle for smaller capacity when you can get greater capacity for the same funds?

Pro 80-hour With minor differences in hardware, is based on the proven
60-hour machine.
80-hour vs 60-hour recording
Comes with the new 3.2 software.
Offered at same price as 60-hour unit.

Con 80-hour Although based on the 60-hour platform, is a new,
unproven gadget. Bigger may not be better.

It's hard to say which one too buy... From an email that a friend sent me. He got a 80 hour Unit and decided to "cough" open "cough" the unit up. He says that the "Motherboard" is 1/2 the side as the 60 Hour unit as shown at http://www.9thtee.com/insideseries2tivo.htm.

In the 80 Hours unit he says, the Motherboard is approx 1/2 the box, Power Supple 1/4 and HardDrive 1/4. There is no duel drive tray. If you were going to put a second drive in the 80 Hours it looks as if it needs to be stacked.

As for the 80 Hour unit being an "unproven gadget". I would say that it builds upon the 60 Hour unit and perhaps then some. You never know what "other" future features that the board can now do.... Only time will tell.

They *DON'T* have the same price. 60-hour unit is $350 or less at TiVo, Amazon, Best Buy, Good Guys, etc.

I'd say it depends on if you plan to upgrade the hd or not. If not, go with the 80 hour unit, since it's smaller and you might only be able to fit one drive in there it might not be the best choice for an upgrade. And the extra 20 hours will be nice to have if you never upgrade it.

If you do plan to upgrade, you might as well save some money and get the 60 hour unit, put the savings into the extra HD.

An important thing to keep in mind: If you plan on using your Tivo without a cable box, the 60 hour units have a problem tuning channel 27. Don't know if that's an important channel to you or not, but whatever the problem is looks like it has been resolved in the 80 hour unit.
If you plan on always using your Tivo with a cable box, or never watching channel 27, then I'd tend to agree with most of the others on here - save $50, and get the 60 hour, knowing you can always upgrade later on.
Unfortunately, nobody from Tivo has commented on whether or not the latest software release will do anything to fix the Ch. 27 problem

Best Buy Has 60hr Series2 for 331.92!

You can use the $68..07 saved to use towards HD upgrade! Not worth $68 for only 20hr more...

That's the strangest thing! I never noticed that before. Guess I don't watch CourtTV much...

Yeah, unfortunately for us it's TLC, and my wife is hoplessly addicted to Trading Spaces....the room designs are usually ugly enough that they don't need a really poor picture messing them up even more!
