How do I get around 28 day rule?

There are some programs that are broadcast on more than station on a weekend. Sometimes, because of sports, preemptions, etc., I like to use Season Pass to record two showings "just in case".

However, TIVO seems to automatically exclude a second recording of the same program, even on another station. A look at "view upcoming episodes" shows that some are unchecked even if Season Pass specifies that they be recorded. It can be fixed manually but frequently, checking one unchecks a second.

How do set the machine to record more than one broadcast of the same program. Thank you. Peter

I think a A Manual recording will work. It is different from a Season Pass, since it will record that channel and time regardless of what actual show is on.

Also in Tivo version 3.0 -- There is a SP option to record ALL shows (turn off the 28 day rule!). So if you have an SA, you will probably be getting 3.0 in a few months. DirecTivo customers I think may be waiting until fall.

Do a true manual recording from time A to time B on Date X to get the repeat. That way it won't uncheck the season-pass generated recording.

I think the problem you're seeing is happening because Season Passes are channel-specific, not because of the 28-day rule.

You can either set up another SP on the other channel, or use a WishList instead to find and AutoRecord the shows.

If the show are on the same channel, you can choose to record all Episodes, including duplicates, once you get v3.0.

Yes, that is a feature of SPs. Make a wishlist and it will catch anything on any channel.

As a side note though, it is possible to override the 28 day rule in version 3.0.

Also, if you specifically request two showings of the same program, it will record them.

If you ask for a second viewing of something that's already scheduled through a season pass, it will drop the season pass showing, but when you then ask for that one, it will keep them both.

That is, it only drops double-checked (Season Pass) or starred (Wishlist) showings, not single-checked ones.

(Was that clear?)

Okay, everyone is making this more complex than it needs to be.

The 28 day rule basically is "don't automatically record the same episode more than once within 28 days". So if it's skipping a recording, it probably thinks that the two episodes are identical.

If you manually pick one and select "Record this episode" then that is not an "automatic recording", and the 28 day rule won't apply to it. It'll still apply to the other one, however, and yeah, your manual choice will remove the other one.

So, pick the other one and say "record this episode" on it too. Tivo will record them both. Why? Because when you manually tell it to do something, you're playing the trump card. It always should do everything you specifically tell it to do. The only time the 28 day rule applies is on "automatic" recordings like Wishlists or SPs or even repeating manual recordings.

Anything with "one check" in the ToDo list is something you specifically told Tivo to do, and the 28 day rule will not apply to that specific airing/recording.

2 season passes, or even a Wishlist and Season Pass will STILL not defeat the 28 day rule. That rule states that an individual episode will only be recorded once every 28 days regardless of how many times it matches a Season Pass or Wishlist.

A manual recording is the only ALWAYS record mode.

In 3.0, the 28 day rule can be turned off for an individual Season Pass and Wishlist.

Finally! I've wanted this feature ever since the 28 day rule went into effect. On the whole I love the 28 day feature, as it avoids filling up my harddrive with multiple episodes of the Simpsons (which I receive on two different channels, each showing two episodes a day at least). However, when the guide data is bad, it really screws things up: the 28 day rule causes it to not record episodes I have not seen, because due to faulty guide data the TiVo thinks it has already recorded the episode. This has happened a lot to some of my favorite shows, such as Farscape. Being able to turn off the 28 day rule for Farscape and other Season Passes that have this problem is a basic feature which should have been thought of when Season Passes was first designed.

Seems simple enough, doesn't it?

I guess TiVo just put a little too much faith on the folks providing the guide data.
