First Standalone PVR in Canada - RCA DRS7000N

http://www.rca.com/product/viewdeta...I700287,00.html

Just saw this on TechTV.

It goes fro $799 Cdn for only a 40 gig hard drive - yikes! But, hey, at least there is SOME PVR available to the masses in Canada.

Boy, is that model number going to get confusing. Since Philips had a DirecTV DVR series 2 model # DSR7000.

Not to be unduly corrective.. but it's not the first standalone PVR really. There are a couple with GuidePlus from Gemstar available in the Canadian market for a few months.

This *is* however the first that's capable of recording Dolby Digital programming. Wahhoo!

It's the first I've known about John. There are, of course, the usual bunch of PVR software apps that can run on a PC. But none created specifically to act independantly of the PC in your living room. What other non-PC-based stand-alone PVRs are there?

Dale you can get it for $220 US at overstock.com http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2...&cid=17159&fp=F
Not too bad for progressive DVD player/ DVR with free subscription combo.

I'm going to be in Toronto for a week starting wednesday. It really has nothing to do with this thread, but it didn't seem worthy of its own thread...

That DVR can not record Dolby Digital programming. Only DVRs so far capable of recording Dolby Digital audio do so with firewire or built in satellite or digital cable tuner. This DVR has none of those. It may be some PVR will have a digital audio input and record Dolby Digital audio in the future but I will not bet on it.

If canada uses NTSC (which I think they do), then a TiVo subbed in the US would work if used with an american subbed DBS system. Not legal, but good anways.

Not a whole lot of Canadians have a US system (the number strewn about is 700K). Now using a Tivo with a Canadian provider is a different thing, and can be done (albeit with work on the users part to get gude data to the Tivo).

This has been out in the States for quite a while now. Is it only just becoming available in Canada?

These models have been available at Futureshop for a while.. some of them use the GuidePlus system.. same as the RCA..

Pioneer 520H-S DVD-Rec w/ 80 GB drive..
Pioneer DVR-320 - DVD-Rec no drive..

And a Sony unit with DVD rec and HD.. that uses the Guide Plus system..

Will GuidePlus work for DBS? Or is it just for Cable?

No control for DBS, probably.

That would be half the issue. The other half is does the Gemstar data pass over satellite, which Canadian broadcaster(s) transmits it, and are there listings for Canadian cable, satellite, and antenna systems.
