You don't need Windows 98 or Windows anything. You do need at the least a disk that Linux can read with your backup on it. That can be on a separate hard drive, a FAT32 partition on your existing disk, or on a CD.

Do you have any FAT32 partitions on your hard drive?

You should find that you can just follow Hinsdale's instructions. NTFS partitions do mount, but they're read-only, which makes creating a backup a bit tricky.

Do they really? I wish I had known that a few weeks ago.... I was able to restore from an image on CD, though.

You didn't include the x switch to expand. You'll now need to run MFSADD.

Boot up with the mfstools cd and when you get to the # prompt type in

mfsadd -x /dev/hdx

The x is for whatever controller you put it on

a for primary master
b for primary slave
c for secondary master
d for secondary slave

After you hit enter it will only take a few seconds to expand your drive. It also should tell you how many estimated hours it has.

Hit CTRL ALT DEL

Take drive out and put it back in tivo. Boot up and your done.

Hope that helps.

Depending on how bad the hard drive is damaged will depend on a good recovery.

You will just use the mfsadd command again but it will look like this.

mfsadd -x /dev/hdx /dev/hdx

The second /dev/hdx will be the second drive you will be adding. The x is what controller you are using.

Example....if you have your tivo drive on the primary slave and the new drive on the secondary master the command line to expand would look like this....

mfsadd -x /dev/hdb /dev/hdc

You will not lose your recordings if you add a second drive. The mfsadd command line is all you need to do to make the drive usable. You are just basically telling your tivo drive...hey I have a second drive to use. Lets get married. heheh!

160 gig drive is the highest but that takes some work getting past the drive limitation. I would just go with another 120 giggers.
