New 810 Owner

I'm a new owner of a Pioneer 810. I'm not what you'd call an early adopter, otherwise. I just wired my house with a Linksys Wireless router, so a USB connection is just down the road. I'll be hooking things up tonight and will provide a blow by blow description of the ease/problems in the configuration. Complicating things is the existence of a Series 1 SA that needs to keep recording while all this is going on. With only one cable box and a need to reconfigure for serial control, I'll just have to bite the bullet and let Navy NCIS go for tonight. That gives me a 3.5 hour window for hookup and test calls. I've also got a full plate of season passes to re-enter.

I'll let everybody know how it goes, as I dive deeper into TiVo-land (and loving it!)

Welcome to the 810 club! It'll be neat to see what you think of the unit, and how the setup goes. If it goes as well as my setup did, you should be ready to roll in no time.

Talking (810 Setup)

Things went surprisingly well, The unit came up and worked as expected right out of the box. First the short setup and first call, then setting up my cable box and the like. One major disappointment was that my cable company, even though they gave me a "TiVo box" with the nine pin D-connector, doesn't support authorizing it. Well, back to the old stick on IR method. I immediately asked for and was given the free 45 day trial, so I now have full functionality.

A few things I really like. While waiting for the endless second call/data repack to occur, I threw in a DVD and was blown away. My previous DVD player was a Go-video combo with VCR and I have upgraded to a Toshiba 42" HD Rear Projection set. The faroudja filters are wonderful and no motion artifacts.
I can tell that soon I'll be cracking the case to add a large hard drive, since I will probably use Medium quality for now to keep from having to delete too much.

The download/index finished, and everything came back up. I still had no TiVo Plus. I forced a call and 30 minutes later, everything was back to normal.

So far so good, I had a few moments of angst when trying to set the remotes for their respective units, until I remembered you have to cover the IR port of the unit you're NOT programming. Once I did that, I had proper control.

It took longer than expected, but I like the new unit and can't wait to burn a DVD later today. I'll have to add a better audio setup to take advantage of the digital video output. I'd like to get more space as well.
