Backup Question

I would like at some point to upgrade my Tivo, but I am concerned about the backup. I'm a bit leery of doing it without a backup, but I also don't want to have to buy two new drives. Can the drive be backed up directly to a CD or to a partition of an existing Windows drive?

I don't think you can backup to a CD directly but read the hack FAQ at the top of the page and it shows you how to split the files to put on a CD.. I put my backup on a drive then used that as my new drive in the unit.. This way you can keep the original one just incase something bad happens. You say you cant/ don't want another dive for the backup. Try comp Usa 15 gig $50 cheap insurance for a working Tivo.. unless you have a 30hr model. But if I were you I would most deffinately make a backup.. Safe is better than sorry... oops now you cant go back.

You can back up to a FAT partition with no problem, see HackFAQ . The problem may be having sufficient HD space. Unless the drive is "virgin" you'll need about as much free space as your Tivo's basic recording capacity and a lot of time to burn it to CD. I don't know anyone with a pc with 30GB of free HD space just sitting around.

Does the backup drive need to be the same size as the orignal? I have a 30 hour unit. Could I back it up to a larger HD, burn the backup to CD, and then reformat the HD and use it in the Tivo?

Okay, I guess I asked too many questions. Was that "yes the drive needs to be the same size", or "yes, it is possible to do what you suggest"?

Yes. it is possible to do what you request. I was going to do this for my upgrade, back up the 30gbTivo A drive to the 80gb "B" drive, burn the image to cd, then bless the 80gb and install it in the Tivo. One (big) problem with this is, you can't try the back to make sure it's OK without risking your A drive. There have been plenty of posts here about people trying to restore from a image only to find that the b/u was no good. Unless they can find someone to give them a image, their Tivo is dead. if you do a straight copy to a Quantum (Maxtor) drive, you can put the b/u into the Tivo and use it as the A drive, you'll know right away if it's a good b/u and know that you have a "solid" b/u drive put aside. Either way, your trading money for security.

Back up the 30gbTivo A drive to the 80gb "B" drive, burn the image to cd, run the image back to the "B" drive and test. That will let you know your backup is good.

If you have a Best Buy and a CompUSA in your area, you can get a 15G Maxtor for $30 after rebate.

Best Buy has the drive for $80 - $40rebate = $40
CompUSA has the same drive for $100 - $50rebate = $50

Have CompUSA pricematch Best Buy, you still get CompUSA's $50 rebate = $30

I did this yesterday, no problems.
