Slate.com says TiVo is doomed!!!
Brendan Koerner at Slate.com has posted an article detailing the financial woes of TiVo; his thesis is that the financial collapse of the company is imminent and that TiVo machines will go the way of the Commodore 64, to be ultimately replaced by much cheaper, easier-to-operate digital recorders, or, more likely, record-to-DVD machines.

In my opinion, other than the alarming news at how poorly TiVo stock is performing, the only valid criticism Mr. Koerner voices is the old stumbling block of the TiVo subscription fee. With so many digital cable TV systems and satellite systems offering on-screen what's-on-today menus, I am just beginning to believe my TiVo membership may be superfluous, although I do think the user interface with the TiVo is much simpler and more detailed than the built-in one with the cable TV.
I received a Sony SVR-2000 TiVo with a lifetime membership as a Christmas present two years ago and I adore it. I upgraded the recorder from 30 to 180 hours this summer and I cannot overstate the convenience of the machine.
