Talking Playing programs saved elsewhere

I would like to save program material somewhere else
and bring it back to the TIVO system at a later time.
Please send any comments regarding the ethics of this
to /dev/null.

For the time I wish to ignore the details of moving
and storing the data. I would like to talk about
how to use the data.

I hope this is not a rehash!

Is the "now showing" screen generated from a data file
or from disk directory information? My guess is that
it is from a datafile. This would be too easy if TIVO
did not use a datafile.

Does anyone understand the datafile/database used to
generate the "now showing" screen?

Has anyone identified code or scripts that can be used
to modify the database?

Does the TIVO database use any type of file or record
level locking. I would guess that the linux kernel
proivides file level locking. Does this mean that
we can not open the data file at all?

From my experience, your challenge isn't going to be in getting the data, but in moving the data to another device. If you get that part working over something other than a slow PPP connection through the serial port then I'm sure everyone would be interested in knowing.

If you can figure out how the data is stored, then it's just a matter of hooking the hard drive up to your system and copying it over.

Of course, nobody has figured out how the data is stored, yet. There's more important things to do.

It may be easy to read the data from the linux system.
We need to get "Now playing" to reflect the presence of
data/programs when they are restored.

In my post I stated that I wanted to ignore the method by
which the data moved. Sorphin indicated that he and maybe
bonehead were looking into getting a lan connection up and
running. See the thread "A VGA card in my TIVO"
(or somthing like that).

I do not want to waste my time by duplicating their effort.

The are too many other interesting things to look into.
If no one else has done so I will start by finding the
answers to the questions I asked in the first post on this
thread.
