copy recordings from Tivo to PC??

NEWBIE ALERT

I have a series 1 DirecTivo and what I would like to do is take the recordings on the hard drive of the TIVO and send them to my PC. Then I could DIVX or DVD the MPEGs. Is this possible? I have no problem with installing the Turbonet ethernet card or even pulling the drive and running it in a Linux box. There are a lot of guides showing you how to install and do the setups, but I haven't read any good articles on what you can do with these mods. I think you can archive the files on your PC and then ftp them back to the TIVO for play. What I would like to know is if you can convert those files into MPEG files?

If this isn't the place to discussthis topic please give me a link to another forum.

Thanks
Jerry

Can't talk about that here. There are other sites and forums that talk about extraction.

Easy. Get capture card for PC. Hook TiVo's output to capture card. Set PC program to record from capture card. Hit "Save to VCR" on TiVo. Wait. When complete, hit "stop" in PC program, and edit away until you have your DVD.

ppl on these forums are kinda scared to talk about video extraction from tivo for fear of legal action, but tivo's do have a video out and can be hooked to other device to record it. just like ppl who made cd's that won't play on cd-roms. you could just use a digital connection to your pc and have the same quaility of recording. anyways i think it fair use to be able to record the programs on media, just like normal VCRs. they don't want to be the business for setting legal standards in the courts, but in the future, especially for dvd-r becoming cheaper and easier, they should start thinking about their up coming competetion if not integrating it. someone will eventually have to test this section of the DMCA and copyright laws, someone other than 2600. because it so stupid that i can record of a show on a video tape, and keep for years then watch it again, but i can't download video on a DVR and put it on a DVD-r.

annnnnyways just search google for tivo digital video extraction.
it is a lot of work, but possible.

Tivo is so lame about this. Do they really think 5 GB files of crappy video are going to be flying around the internet? Tivo needs to buy a clue that people are going to want to watch programs on different devices (notebooks, archos jukebox, iPod, etc.). And that 3 GB video files aren't going to float around like 3 MB mp3's.

They got a "clue" when SonicBlue (ReplayTV's bankrupt ex-owner) was sued on multiple fronts for allowing such show-sharing features, among other things. If Tivo wants to survive, they'll continue to be smart and limit show transfers.

:P

People on these forums choose to obey the wishes of the people who own the hardware and bandwidth that the forums run via. For me it is a simple matter of respecting their wishes. If you want to talk about subjects not welcome here, you just go elsewhere.
