Louisville Gets Dress Code...

A Louisville entertainment district has a dress code, and some people aren't happy about it.

Fourth Street in Louisville is a block of nightclubs, bars and shops.

Three nights a week, sports jerseys, sleeveless shirts and backward ball caps are not allowed. Some say that's biased against African Americans and the poor.

A Kentucky minister is the one leading the protest. And now the A.C.L.U. is involved.

But the developers, the Cordish Group, say they're sticking to the original rules.

Zed Smith of Cordish Group commented, "The intent of the dress code is to raise the bar, and enhance the standard here. It has nothing to do with race. We apply the policy nationally, not just us, but at other entertainment venues throughout the country, there is a standard of dress."

The protestors did ask for a compromise: no sagging paints, bare midriffs and gang related clothing.

It's not a new trend. It was in when I was in high school.

I left high school 6 years ago. I feel old.

I assume that this is a dress code for getting into these clubs? (I.e., I can still wear whatever I want when I just walk down the street.) This doesn't come as a huge shocker to me. Dress codes like that have been in practice for a long time in lots of establishments in most cities. They are all a bit different as to the specifics, but are generally the same. (Most I hear are 'collars required for males, and no jeans or sneakers'.)

The thing that gets me is how they think it offends African Americans.

Excuse my newbie-ism.....

What do you guys mean by 'Shannon'? Are you referring to supham? Or is this some sort of in-joke?

There was a time when Melody Chalis was called Shannon. She protected us from the grammar infidels.

If it's a private club, I don't see a problem with it. As the owner of a business, you should be able to post entry standards, if you can live with the results.

We have clubs in town that require a collared shirt and no headwear, period. Some people claim it's discrimination. The business says they don't want people wearing street clothes in their club. You abide or you don't go in. We also have golf courses that require a collared shirt.

Actually, it sounds like the street itself gets blocked off 3 nights a week and bouncers enforce a dress code to walk down the street. (article)

That I have a little more of a problem with. Public space ought to be public space. However, the city did grant a private entity a permit for exclusive use of the space on a repeated basis. So people need to complain to the city for granting such a broad permit.
