Second Drive in 80Hr Series 2?

I remember when these things came out there was a question as to whether or not a second drive would FIT in the box. It was widely believed it would but would require some rigging to get mounted correctly.

Well, I've got an 80 hour and would like to move to best quality recording only (adding another 80GB should suffice for me). I was wondering what kind of mounting solutions people have used and what kind of success they've had. Does stacking the drives cause any cooling problems?

Searched the forum for something relating to this, but didn't find anything (beyiond the original threads months ago). Forgive me if this has been covered in detail already.

Also I believe there were some questions of whether the series 2 units had a powerful enough power supply to handle two drives.

Apparently the size of the powersupply (Watts output) was reduced from Series 1 to Series 2.

You may want to look into this further.

There's enough power on a short-term basis for a Series 2 80-hour to boot and run with two drives, the real question, I think, was if there are any long-term effects, and I don't know that anyone's been doing it for a long enough term to know. Mine is fine with 2x120 GB Seagate 7200 RPM drives, been running that way for a few weeks now, and using the Weaknees TwinBreeze Complete kit my internal temperature went down by a couple of degrees vs. the stock drive.

Hmmm, well the temperature going down sure doesn't hurt it any! If it's got enough power to run the two drives what could possbily be the long term harm?

My only guess is that the power needed might be right on the edge of the power supply's capacity, and thus it might be too much stress for the power supply, but I don't know beyond that.

If you read the TwinBreeze link, near the bottom you will see this:

==================================================
TiVo Series 2 80 and 40 hour compatibility (230040, 240040 and 240080):

The TwinBreeze WILL work in these units, however the power supply may be inadequate to support two drives during startup procedures. We are working on a solution to this problem, and we will update the page when we have more information. Our target release date is now April 21, 2003. In the meantime, you can add a second drive with the TwinBreeze (at your own risk), and then install our power part later, if you choose.

==================================================

So a solution is comming....
