Unhappy "Start/Stop Recording" Not Quite Smart Enough...

Hmmm.... this is one of those sitatuions where TiVo's not QUITE smart enough for its own good.

Here's the situation:

"60 Minutes" is on from 7:00pm to 8:00pm.
"The Simpsons" is on from 8:00pm to 8:30pm.

I have seasons passes to both.

However, "The Simpsons" regularly starts about 30 seconds early, so I always miss what Bart is writing on the chalkboard. So I set The Simpsons to start recording 1 minute early, so I catch the chalkboard bit.

But unfortunately, that completely obliterates the "60 Minutes" seasons pass, because TiVo thinks that "60 Minutes" is now being overlapped by The Simpsons (which is higher on my seasons pass manager than "60 Minutes").

So now I'm left with "The Simpsons" but no "60 Minutes". TiVo should actually be smart enough to realize that I would rather have 59 minutes of "60 minutes" than NOT have it at all! This would be the ideal situation!! TiVo should allow us to capture a "PARTIAL RECORDING" of a show, if given the opportunity to do so. Yes, I'd rather have the 59-minute PARTIAL RECORDING than not get it at all.

So the only thing I'm left to do is set a MANUAL recording of "60 Minutes", but because the manual recording feature is in 5 minute increments, the best I can do is get 55 minutes of "60 Minutes"! So now I really am missing something -- namely, the coming attractions for next week. At 59 minutes, I'm missing barely anything... but at 55 minutes, I really AM missing something now!

I would love to see the feature to allow "partial recordings" whenever possible.

Great suggestion, if I might say so myself. ;-)

See ya!
Scott

Talking

Heya Scott. Not much new to be covered here... this was discussed for the better part of a year already with much spirited exchanges. I raised it a few weeks back:

In any case, the who issue of "hard" pads vs. "soft" pads is not as easy as you might think, when you factor in moving TV schedules and the prospect of dual tuners. Besides, the onus is really on the networks to air their shows on time. I must say that most of my recordings start precisely on the dot. It's when CBS and Fox get aggressively "creative" that it throws my precious TiVo off.

Personally I'd also like to see "negative" pads where you can start a show late or have it end early. Being able to schedule a manual recording in single-minute increments would help too. In the future, I'd love even more intelligence, where TiVo would know that I want show "A" to start taping early, so long as it doesn't cut anything else off... some sort of prioritization on the pads themselves. I've even heard suggestions that TiVo "look" for the black screen that indicates a show is starting/ending. I still come back to the notion that the networks should just start everything on time when they can help it.

In the meantime, though, use manual recording to your advantage, for precise control. I suggest you set "60 Minutes" to record manually from 7 to 8:55 PM, with a 3 minute pad at the end. Then set "Simpsons" to record manually at 8 to 8:30 PM, with a 2 minute pad at the beginning. That way you're covered! Of course it's not as elegant as a season pass with pads, but it works.

For now I guess we should be happy that pads exist at all, and look forward to what TiVo has in store for us in the future.

I can verify that "The Simpsons" has consistently started at 7:59:30 for years. My simpler version of the above procedure is to read alt.tv.simpsons later Sunday evening to find out what Bart was writing on the blackboard.

Red face

So basically all we are asking for is negative padding. We got to add time (start early) in v2.0 but no end early.
