"Fake" 2-tuners, real minor bug
A while ago a few people reported a double-take when it looked like the Tivo was simultaneously recording live TV and a preprogrammed recording on another channel. I saw this the other day myself, and today I reproduced it on purpose to figure out what's going on. Sadly, it's not an undocumented way to make the two tuners work after all.
So, the situation shows up if you're watching live TV a bit behind live time. The Tivo asks you if it's okay to switch channels, and you say 'yes'. Meanwhile, you continue watching out of the 30-minute buffer while the Tivo records the next show on a different channel.
Now, the weird thing is, if you wait a few minutes, it looks like the live TV buffer is continuing to fill up. You can even watch parts of the buffer that say they took place AFTER the Tivo changed channels on you and started (successfully, if you check later) recording the other show.
What's really going on is a minor bug that screws up the time stamps. Instead of reading that the previous show stopped when it did, it always shows that it stops "now"... the old buffer is being pulled forward in time so that its endpoint is always the current time, instead of when the Tivo stopped recording the buffer to switch channels.
So, no actual double-recording is going on, unfortunately. It's just a minor bug where the Tivo programmers assumed that the live TV buffer always ends at the current time, which is pretty reasonable except in this slightly odd situation.
