Pony's Back from CES...

Well, almost back.

CES was fantastic. It was great to meet some of you down there in person and have the chance to show off our new toys. I noticed there are some long threads about TiVoToGo already.

My flight just got in an hour ago, I've spent the past eleven days working round the clock in Vegas.

So I'm off to take a long afternoon nap. I'll be back to say hi tomorrow.

You all behaved while I was gone, right?

Cheers,
Pony

Yea, about as well as usual.

I have (like most folks) bunches of questions, but I have a feeling they all fall under the "can't really get answered" type. I'm looking forward to TiVo-To-Go when it has Macintosh support as well as working with the DTiVo. (hint, hint)

Is that anything like saying, "Sire, the peasants are revolting!". To which the ruler responds, "Yes, they certainly are."

Hey PonyMan!

Glad to hear your back, hope your now well rested.

Let me start the gauntlet of questions that you know are coming:

Will Tivo-To-Go, by chance, allow a functionality that would permit Tivo recorded content to be stored on a network share (Think server) and then reimported back into the Tivo upon request. Essentially permitting Tivo drive space to be expanded to the LAN? This is the feature that I'm drooling after.

Thanks.

So how much did you win/lose at the tables?

Phil

Will TiVo-To-Go ever work with a device like the RCA Lyra RD2780 A/V Jukebox????? I bought one before christmass and it was really neat...but I had to use the analog in on it to transfer shows from my tivo to it. The only problem is that it is real time and whenever im home im using the tivo ...so i had to return it because I never got to record shows to it.

But if I could transfer the show to my computer then to the lyra that would be good...a dircet USB connection fro tivo to rca would be even better......

Unlikely. Those things use MPEG-4 compression, TiVos use MPEG-2. The software could transcode the video, but MPEG-4 compression is the most commonly traded file format on the internet, and preventing internet sharing is one of the main reasons TiVo is requiring a hardware dongle to decode the video in the first place.

Ok, Heres what I don't understand. The Dongle decodes the data? Or is it just a medium to get the data to the computer?

As far as I can tell it's part of the decryption process (exactly which part I'm not exactly sure). The video files get transfered over your home network to your PC where the USB dongle is needed
