The broadcast will be shown live at 5:00am May 4th on channel 855 for those that want to watch. That channel will be open for the rest of the day as well and the launch will be looped for playback.

A Succesfull launch, means more HD!

Ok, just tell me when I can turn on my TV and see D* broadcasting Starz HD, Cinemax HD, TNT HD, NBC, Fox, etc.

The suspense is killing me.

BTW, has D* given any concrete information as to how the new Sats. bandwidth be used. I had heard more local station coverage, but that won't take up the entire spectrum, will it?

The new satellite will be used for local market stations (via spot beams).

But it will free up 7-8 transponders at 101° that carry local stations on national transponders right now. And that's where we are hoping to see more HD show up (there'll still be some national transponders on 119° so there is a little room there too). The only thing announced has been FOX HD E/W by the fall. Everything else is speculation.

Seeing as there probably won't be much of an NHL season next year, this is unlikely.

Except for movies, the main reason I'm getting HD is for sports, especially baseball. It looks like the only hope for baseballHD fans right now is INHD(2 channels). If these are not among the(7 or 8?)channels opened up the new satellite, when will HDbaseball be generally available on Directv? It doesn't look very encouraging right now.

Might not be as bad as you think. Even if they do the LIL's with the 7s, it will still clear up a few transponders and have a few more left over. Some of those slots will go to national services such as Starz HD. But there should be space left to spot beam local stations HD signals, and (more importantly), local sports networks, such as FSN, WGN etc.

We will just have to sit tight for a couple of months and see what happens.

(Actually, might be longer than that. Even after it becomes operational, I kinda doubt D* will max it out right from the start).

I wonder if they'll have to transition the changeover slowly from national transponders to spot beams or if they'd consider trying to do it all at once. My guess would be they'll approach it a transponders worth of channels at a time if the current transponder usage permits.

I suspect it will have to be a long slow transition. Remember, it's very likely that anyone getting their locals from 101 will not likely have an oval dish. You can't just start moving locals when those people won't be able to see it. I do assume it will be the smaller markets that are moved so there will be less cost. But one way or another those people will need new dishes.

Also keep in mind, the number of spot beams any transponder can support is directly related to the number of uplink facilities D* has. So D* could squeeze even more stations onto spot beams if they'd build a few more uplink centers. This could free up a few more transponders that could be used for national coverage. And frankly, as much as I'd like to see more HD channels, I'd really like to see better picture quality on the SD channels too.

I sure hope not. DirecTV made a HUGE mistake by putting any HD channels at 101. HD takes up too much bandwidth and should be regulated to either 119 or 110 only.
