How long to "clear and delete"?

Our hard drive took a powder and my husband set about reformating to see if we could recover the drive. It's been 4 hours, and the gray "Clearing and deleting everything. This will take one hour" screen hasn't changed. I think the drive in this one is 160 hours.

At what point do we give up? How do we restart the formatting, or is that not an option?

Thanks for your help!!

Let it run at least 24 hours before giving up on it. After that try rebooting, if it gives you the "Green Screen of Death" (with a message about how it's trying to repair/recover the system) you can let it try recovering from that, give it another 24 hours. If that fails, time to buy a new disk.

Well, we tried and eventually the TiVo reported that it was shutting down due to overheat.

I took the drive out and ran PowerMax, it reports that the drive is faliing. So, off to Maxtor for an RMA. The drive is still under warrantee so we'll have a replacement soon.

In the mean time, the CompUSA near us has 160g Maxtor drive for $80.00! I couldn't resist... The new drive is in and going through setup right now. When the replacement arrives I'll be putting it in our server (there's only about 14g free at the moment)

Thanks for the help!

Double-check the fan, too. TiVo shouldn't overheat if the fan is working.

Thanks for the thought ccwf, the fan does appear to be running though not a lot of air is being pushed through. I'll keep an eye on it to see if the temp gets too high.

Cheers,
DrLlama
