Just got a Tivo Series 2 DVP but do I have to buy the service?

Hi There, spent some time searching before asking but I won one of these units in a raffle but balking at $12.95 service. Read some posts that said only the series 1 units could by used like a vcr recorder and basically I'm out of luck with the series 2. Tivo doesnt explain much about this is in the manual or on their site but I was able to find this blurb about the capabilities of the machine without the servcie "A TiVo DVR has extremely limited functionality, e.g., pause, fast-forward, rewind, and slow-mo live TV." but it doesnt mention anything about the recording of show.

Is there a better description of what the unit can do without the service or is above quote the full capability of the machine? i think my unit was made by Tivo.

Yep. Unless you got one make y Pioneer or Toshiba all you can do is Trick play Live TV. No recording.

Are you sure that it didn't come with Lifetime service?

If not, pay the 13 bucks/ month or $300 1 time because it is DEFINITELY worth it.

Yep, without service the Series 2 SA's are pretty much useless. I'd suggest trying the service for a month or two and you may decide it's more than worth the $13/mo., and may even opt for lifetime.

If you want VCR-like capability w/o TiVo service, about the only way to get it is to buy a refurbished Series 1, or one of the newer, expensive, combo units that include "basic" TiVo service.
