(000)-000-0000 caller ID - New telmarketing SCUM tactic?

For about the past week I've been getting calls with (000)000-0000 display on the caller ID

It's a voice activated bot, so when you answer, and say hello 2 or 3 times it replies " Please cal 888-874-3596 between the hours of 8am and 5pm).

IF you call the number, you get ANOTHER recording that says "DS2 We're sorry your call cannot be completed at this time ... if you feel you have reached this recording in error, please call customer service "

So I don't know if it is just a "broken" auto-dialer somewhere that got-hold of my number, or if it's some kind of scam where my phone bill gets charged $85.00 per call when I dial the number ..

I don't see an advantage to them dialing me and then not letting me call back, unless they are just phishing for valid numbers. But even so, why do they KEEP calling ??

Anyone else experiencing anything like this ?

I swear I'm ready to kick ALL my phone svc to the curb ... So much for "do not call " registry

I wouldn't even answer a number like that. I've seen it in the past few weeks as well.

I didn't answer the first 3 or 4 times, but my kids answered once, and then I decided to START answering them in an attempt to STOP them from calling.

Also, all my phones don't have CID, so sometimes I don't know who's calling.

One week I was getting a whole lot of those reflected on caller ID. Like 5-8 calls per day from that number. I tried redial, but of course that just got me the operator. I lodged a complaint with her, and I haven't gotten another call from the 0 people since then. I am sure that was just a coincidence, but hopefully they will get bored of calling you as well.

Call Intercept blocks these calls. We used to get calls from those numbers and they were always political in nature, trying to get out the vote for someone. When I did get one and answered it I asked who the other candidate was in the race. I then informed the caller that I will be voting for the other person, since they were smart enough NOT to call me.

Are any of you who are getting these calls on the national DNC list?

I am, and haven't seen any, but think that's probably just chance...

Yep, me too!

I *partially* blame equipment manufacturers for even ALLOWING a "000-0000" telephone # to be sent, and the Telco's for not just barfing it back in the face of the scumbuckets.

Of course, they would find another way. They always do!

What I fail to understand though is the advantage to anyone doing this. ???

(other than Pi%%ing people off!

On the DNC lists (state and national), no 000-000-0000 here.

I got a SMS text message on my Treo a few weeks ago from (000) 000-0000. There was no preview text and when I tried to read it, it rebooted my phone!

I've deleted it, but I also did a hard reset and reinstalled everything just to make sure there weren't any bits of trash lying around.
