CD Rip encoding - Help

If I buy the HMO, I wanted to use APE compression on my CD rips. Will HMO play those files? If not, what's the highest quality MP3 encoder?

Thanks for your help.

TiVo's HMO plays only MP3. You could use something like J. River Media Center which does transcoding on-the-fly, but you have all the usually problems with that method (loss of quality due to transcoding, cpu required, etc.) And I don't know if that software supports APE. There is a TiVo and J. River forum (not on this board) devoted to using the J. River software with TiVo.

As for the "best" MP3 encoder... lots of people swear by LAME, but it doesn't do the ripping - just the encoding. I myself use MusicMatch and find it to do a very good job.

If you're running Linux as a server then you can do on the fly conversion from APE to MP3... but you'd have to extend one of the Linux HMO servers to do that (should be pretty trivial... the ptivohmo project already does OGG->MP3 IIRC).

Lame is the highest quality encoder out there... I suggest checking out Hydrogenaudio for suggestions on what switches to use.

If you're ripping from Windows, then CDex is a pretty capable program. From Linux Grip is good. For MP3 tagging the best tool I've found is easyTag for Linux.
