Non-MP3 Formats With HMO?

It is my understanding that the Tivo can only play MP3-encoded music, and therefore any "publish-to-Tivo" software that supports non-MP3 encodings (like J River) must transcode into MP3.

Questions:
1) How is the resulting audio quality? For example, I've specifically
been told that decoding an AAC to a WAV and then re-encoding
that as MP3 gives a crappy-sounding result due to the different
psychoacoustic models in the two encoding schemes. True?
And if so, which encodings do sound decent when transcoded
into MP3?

2) And if it's not true, does J River (or anything else) support playing
AACs into the Tivo?

Thanks.

As far as I'm aware, this is true -- the HMO software on the TiVo only recognizes MP3 files, so servers that support other formats do this by transcoding them to MP3. The transcode can add more artifacts to the sound, but they can always transcode to MP3's max bitrate (320Kbps?) to help with that.

I don't know if the J. River Media software supports AAC. Supposedly, a future release of the Mac TiVo Desktop software will, but there's been no annoucement of an updated product as yet.
