"Tivo to Go"

Cool news:

"Owners of the TiVo Series 2 hardware who have networked the device with the $100 Home Media Option will be able to transfer recordings to a PC to view or burn to DVD disc, says Mike Ramsay, TiVo CEO...."

Not so cool news:

"The TiVo Content Security Key is the hardware portion. TiVo designed it to ensure recorded content stays secure--which means you can't share it over the Internet, Ramsay says. The key is a small, USB-based device. To access TiVo content on a PC, or to burn it to disc, you must insert the key into the PC. DVDs you burn using the PC will play in any DVD player or PC and do not require the key."

This seems rather silly.... Once the DVD is ripped, I suspect the content could be extracted again with all the usual tools that are available.

But at least we can finally archive some of our shows!

Hopefully, streaming video from the PC to the Tivo will be an option one of these days. Looking at the Media Server spec, it seems like the capability should be there someday....

The security key thing doesn't bother me too much. It gives TiVo (and its partners) the 'security' of knowing that it won't be 'easy' to distribute things over the net. Of course, some people will just burn DVDs then rip the content from those but it's a multi-step process that not everyone will do, so it weeds out the extremely casual pirates. I just hope additional keys are available at a reasonable cost so I can keep one key with my laptop and at least one at home safe in case I loose the one I plan on carrying.

I see a problem with that: Each key would have to use the same serial #. If you could flash your own key, then you could just distribute movies with the key #.

More likely the keys will be hard coded with a serial # and you won't be able to crack that. Which means only 1 key per TiVo....

From TiVo's perspective, once the program is copied over a secure method to DVD, it's out of their hands. They have done everything within their power to make sure that the video was extracted securely, and within legal limits. It's really no different than a VCR, in which we saved shows all the time that can be borrowed, shared, copied, etc., and no one has problems with that (despite the fact that all the same restrictions apply).

I personally can't wait for this. I hate having to put off watching shows simply because someone else is using the main TV (playstation, another TiVo'd show, etc). I have 2 other DVD players in the house (and one in the car ) -- which I will make more use of once this happens. Bring it on!

Being able to dump a half dozen Simpsons episodes to a DVD is a great alternative
