I've adopted a soldier in Iraq! Wanna help?

One of the other boards I frequent adopted an entire Marine (troop, platoon, whatever-I can't remember the word ) consisting of 80 soldiers, and I took over the responsibilities for sending care packages to one (as a part of my "Volunteer For A Tivo" thing-so your donations to me inspired this-so you're already a part of it!).

She's a female, by the way. And she's an LCPL. Which, since I'm not familiar with the Marine corps, what that stands for is a mystery to me.

I was wondering if someone could help out by telling me what kind of boxes are best to pack in for shipping to the middle east.

Or just to flat help out, if you'd like-all ideas would be appreciated. Most of the things suggested will cost me very little thanks to coupons and such. There's a pretty strict list of what I can and can't send, but if you have any freebies lying around, or junk you just flat don't use, and feel like sending it to me to put in the package, let me know!

So if you have good coupons sitting around or certificates for free stuff, I could use those as well. If you'd like to know what is on the list of things I can send, let me know and I'll send you a link for the website.

One of the things I'd like to do is do something of a postcard collection for her-asking people from the two or three boards I frequent to send postcards with photos of where they live with an encouraging note just to give her a nice little scrapbook of photos from America and words of encouragement.

But like I said, any ideas of ways you think of brightening her life over there would be appreciated.

Angie, if you could post the list here it might help; I think most of us have stuff we'd be willing to send or can get stuff to send, if we readily knew what sort of stuff they typically would like to be getting. I'd come across a call for DVD's and books before, for example.

LCPL is Lance Corporal.

Here is a list of all the rankings for the USMC in case you wonder what any other rank is.

Send toiletries. Q-tips, deodorant, and stuff. You have no idea how much that stuff is appreciated. I used to love getting that stuff when I was overseas.

A buddy of mine that just got back from the sandbox said that some of the soldiers really enjoyed receiving bottles of "Listerine" (wink, wink) from home. I guess with it being a dry deployment, some of the men and women missed their booze and that was the way their loved ones tried to help out.
(I understand that you probably don't want to send your adoptee contraband, though, unless she requests it.)
Something else my friend mentioned was that conditions really varied depending on where you were stationed, so she could probably tell you what she's missing most. During his tour, he was places where wet naps/moist towelettes were really appreciated. At other times, he was stationed where he could take a shower daily and they ate in air conditioned buildings. Maybe she can't tell you where she's stationed, but she might be able to give you some hints as to the conditions she's living under.
Anyway, I think it's great what you're doing.
I'm sure anything from home, especially from a stranger, will help make her time over there pass a little easier.

If she's cute I'll catch a ride on a helo and take the stuff up to her. It's not a very long flight from here.

Heh-heh-heh. I don't know why but that made me laugh. I guess I need to get out more.

Yes, among the very no-no items is alcohol. Since I'm doing this as a part of a bigger group, I'd hate to do something that would endanger them. That, and they know exactly who is sending what to who, and I'd hate to lose the chance to send her things to people over there.

Here's a list of things you can't send:
~You will be responsible for the contents of your package! We have
taken on the responsibility of keeping track of who is sending packages
to each soldier. If you send inappropriate materials, it will be traced
back to you, and you could be held accountable. Inappropriate material
includes pornography, alcohol, firearms, and political or religious
material.
~Other banned items are glass containers and pork products or
byproducts of any kind. Please donít send chocolate after May or
before September.

And the suggested items list is here:
http://operationmilitarypride.org/packages.html

One thing I've forgotten to ask that I meant to was how long it takes to fill out a customs form to overseas and if it's that complicated. I've never done one before (from here, although I once did one from England but I figure they're different.)

Also restricted because of her location are:
C1 - Obscene Articles & Comics Obscene articles, prints, paintings, cards, films, videotapes, etc., and horror comics and matrices are prohibited.
E2 - Objectional Material Any matter depicting nude or seminude persons, pornographic or sexual items, or nonauthorized politi-cal materials is prohibited. Although religious materials contrary to the Islamic faith are prohibited in bulk quantities, items for the personal use of the addressee are permissible. (Angie's note: Which is sad, because I had the Republican Pornography Bible Complete With Religious Reference all ready to go. )
H1 - Pork Prohibited Pork or pork by-products are prohibited. (I don't know why but this one makes me laugh. I mean, I know why it's prohibited, but for some reason any time I see the word Pork in print it makes me laugh. Plus, the idea of "pork by-products" is just beyond my comprehension.

I'm also not supposed to send live animals. There's a joke there but I'll be darned if I know what it is (or can say it in mixed company.)

Leather-bound? Or did you go for the trade paperback with the Falwell Apocrypha?

I found it in a remainder bin with a special introduction by Jim Bakker.

By the way, anyone who is interested in helping with the postcard thing, let me know and I'll send an address for you to send to-they're going to have to go to my parents because my mailbox leaks when it rains. And I'm guessing smeared postcards, while nice, are still a step down from non-smeared.

This cracked me up!

But what I want to know is why can't you send firearms to a war zone?

You wanna make a soldier/Marine happy in Iraq/Afghanistan? Baby wipes. Baby wipes, baby wipes and more baby wipes...

Individual packets, big tubs, all of it... My brother is on his way for his 2nd tour. He (and the rest of my fellow Marines) never had enough baby wipes...

And fortunately, that's one thing I have a lot of coupons for. So that will certainly go into my first package.

Oh by the way, the customs form for APO shipping is smaller then a post card by a fair amount. All you'll do is write "Household goods" on it and be done.

I'm bumping this. I've only had a few people volunteer to send postcards from their state. I need more help!

Shoot, if need be, I'll send you a dollar to cover costs. If you don't know where to find local postcards, check your post office or (oddly) a Cracker Barrel, if you have on nearby (that's where I got mine.) If I can find some in rural Illinois, then I'm pretty sure anyone can find them.

PLEASE PM me so I can send you an address to send them to. I'm hoping to put them all together in a package that I'll be sending at the end of July.

Please help me with this! Thanks!
