upgrade question

Just received a 140 tivo as a gift. I have 80 hr unit with lifetime subscription with a hard drive that is failing. Can I simply swap the 140 hr drive with my 80 hours unit so I can keep the lifetime subscription? Is it that easy, just drop in the new drive or must I do something else.

That's not a good idea (I don't think it's proven not to work yet as the 140's are fairly new, but I think it's safe to assume that it won't. Even if it did work, it would break the 140!)

What you need to do is buy a new hard drive and prepare it for the 80 Hour TiVo. You can buy pre-prepared drives from the upgrade shops that sponsor this Forum, or you can do it yourself following the instructions in Hinsdale's or Weaknees posts at the top.

The subscription is tied to the motherboard service number (think about it...), not the hard drive.

I know the subscription is tied to the motherboard that is why I wanted to just switch the drive? Why do you think the drive might break?

Don't the new 140s have version 5.0 of the software? Not sure anyone has tried running 5.0 on the classic Series 2s yet.

Is the 80 hr a Series 2? If so, get a new drive for it, and use HMO to shift the shows between them.
