Not sure if we count as a "large company" in your book (15,000 or so employees world wide), but for us, no, we don't get emails sent to the entire company announcing births, deaths, etc. There *are* localized emails about various activities (like the drivers license truck, blood drives, etc.), plus various newsletter type things directing us to look at the intranet site for more info.
The client in Los Angeles is a different story, however. I have an email account on their email system, I get all sorts of stuff. They send announcements about everything. Grand rounds, deaths, etc. They are better at it now than before. They are now consolidating most announcements into a singal email. Of course, they are singe facility hospital (but a pretty big hospital), so it's not like there are people scattered all over the world in multiple facilties. For the most part, everyone is all located in the same place.
