While we're on the subject of DVD drives... can the SOAK reccomend a external DVD drive for my laptop? I currently have a VERY slow Phillips 4x External Drive that is about 6-7 years old and would like to update to possibly 12x.

Any suggestions?

You can build your own easily. Get an enclosure from Dealsonic like this Plumax for $39 and then buy a DVD-ROM from Newegg like this Lite-On for $30 or this Samsung for $28. Slap the drive into the enclosure and you're good to go. The Plumax is Hi-Speed USB and FireWire so it should be compatible with a wide range of machines. It's not as nice as the slimline external ones that I've seen for laptops but it's quite a bit cheaper.

i also downloaded dvd decrypter, but i'm not sure how that works. i set it up in ISO mode to try and get an image, but it was too big it said. what do i need to do about that?

It really depends on the DVD but I usually find compression lower than 75% to be pretty noticeable.

Set DVD Shrink to produce an ISO instead of a VIDEO_TS folder. Then use DVD Decrypter to burn the ISO. Otherwise you will need some type of burning program like Nero to make a DVD from the VIDEO_TS folder.

As for you DVD Decrypter error, are you sure you had enough free space on your HD to rip the image? A dual layer DVD can be as big as 8.5GiB.

I don't have Shrink on the work machine but IIRC, when you hit compress, a dialog box comes up asking you what type of output you want. The options should be VIDEO_TS folder, ISO image, and direct burn to DVD (via Nero).

Anybody know the answer to this? I'd love to get OEM Nero Suite.

Newegg didn't include Nero when I got my NEC 2500 so if you need it, that seems like a good deal if it's Nero 6.

Apparently the NEC 2510A double layer drive is now shipping. Pretty cheap for the mech but still no idea what pricing on the DVD+R9 media will be.

From techbargains.com:

Livewarehouse has the new NEC ND-2510A 9-in-1 Double Layer DVD±RW Dual Driver (Beige) for $97.99, $9.50 USPS Priority shipping.
