Cool JavaHMO 1.0 Alpha released

This is the first public release of the open source Java version of the media server for the TiVo Home Media Option. The server allows you to view images and play mp3 files stored on your PC, using the TiVo interface on your TV.

The Java server goes beyond the capabilities of the desktop software provided by TiVo, by allowing internet content to be viewed on your TV. Several interesting ideas are planned to be implemented using the TiVo interface including weather, games and online content.

The following features have been implemented in this version:
1. Beacon broadcast protocol.
2. View image files (BMP, GIF, FlashPix, JPEG, PNG, PNM, TIFF, and WBMP).
3. Play mp3 files.
4. Internet weather module based on location.
5. Internet images support based on URL's which are dynamically downloaded.
6. Desktop screendump image to view your PC desktop from your TV.

The JavaHMO project is hosted at sourceforge
Unzip the distribution zip file and read the Readme.txt file

This version has only been tested for Windows XP. The service option only works for Windows (other OS's will be supported in the future).

This version is not optimized, so it might appear a bit slow.

I am looking for some volunteers to test the server and provide feedback/ideas.

Thanks

Since there was no direct link on your home page to the project page on SourceForge, I am posting it here:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/javahmo/

Downloaded it. Will try it out when I get home (out of town right now) tomorrow night.

Exclamation Error

I tried installing the Java HMO server, but I am having an error in installing it. I have installed:

JRE 1.4.2
Advanced Imaging 1.1.2
And java hmo

When I try to start it up as a service, it starts then stops, so I ried to run it with the run.cmd, but it was not able to find Java (I did set up the system var for it). So I hard coded it in batch file. so it looks like it tries to start, but if I look in the LOG files, this is the error I am getting in the wrapper.log

STATUS | wrapper | 2003/08/20 08:19:35 | Launching a JVM...
INFO | jvm 5 | 2003/08/20 08:19:35 | Error: no `server' JVM at `C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\bin\server\jvm.dll'.
ERROR | wrapper | 2003/08/20 08:19:35 | JVM exited while loading the application.
FATAL | wrapper | 2003/08/20 08:19:35 | There were 5 failed launches in a row, each lasting less than 300 seconds. Giving up.
FATAL | wrapper | 2003/08/20 08:19:35 | There may be a configuration problem: please check the logs.

in the log.txt file, I get some of these errors
ERROR [main] AudioTiVoItem - Too many open files

What is the limit? is there a way to increase it?

and on the CMD promp, here are the last few lines

log4j: Renaming file logs\log.txt to logs\log.txt.1
log4j: setFile called: logs/log.txt, false
log4j: setFile ended
Rhino classes (js.jar) not found - Javascript disabled
200
200

I took a look in bot the javahmo dir and the java dir's, and I did not see a js.far OR a jvm.dll (As a matter of fact, I dont even have a server dir in the C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\bin\ dir).

So, what do you think I am doing wrong? do you think I installed the wrong ver. of java? Thanks for any help! This software sounds REALLY exciting!!! I really wantto make it work.

Debugging

Could you please zip the log files and send them to javahmo@users.sourceforge.net so that I can debug your installation.

Thanks

Wow, this looks really interesting. I'll be getting my first Tivo in a couple weeks (and it'll be connected to my home network). Will it be able to communicate with JavaHMO out of the box? Reading through the docs, I got the impression that the Tivo unit needs to get activated in some way.

You'll need to purchase the Home Media Option (HMO) for your TiVo service. This activates the software for Music and Pictures.

I'm sure his program is great, but for a new user, I reccomend that you at least try the official Tivo desktop program first, just to see what it is, before you go experimenting with other stuff.

Wow ... this is pretty neat.

I know this is alpha, but wanted to point out a few things I've noticed:

- the load time is very slow; JavaHMO seems to scan all of my MP3s and images in the folders I've specified. In my MP3 folder alone I've got 1,995 songs ... it takes a long time to scan through all of these. In fact, because of this, I can't seem to start JavaHMO as a service because Win2k keeps timing it out. if I point to just a sub-folder (say My Music\80s) it loads fine as a service

(one thing I should point out here is that all of my MP3s are on a Linux box, which are shared as a drive on my Windows PC via Samba, that could account for some slowness)

- for some reason, the list of folders under "My Music" is not sorted alphabetically; also, I don't see ALL of my folders, and I can scroll down into empty slots (see screenshot). if I keep scrolling on these empty folders I eventually get an Error #3-0-65535

- generation of thumbnails in "My Pictures" is very slow as well. some never ever generated (they just showed up as black boxes) and I couldn't display them

On the plus side:

- having my local radar just a click away on TiVo is too cool
- the screenshot of my PCs desktop could let me spy on my wife's surfing habits.

Very cool ... since this is in Java, I would be interested in getting it to run natively on Linux where all of my MP3s are (and more images).

By the way, if we should move this type of conversation off the Forum and onto SourceForge, let me know.

Sofar I have done very little in terms of performance improvements and most of the testing has been done with few images and mp3s. I hope to speed up JavaHMO significantly in the future.

I am hoping to have a Linux version of the various scripts in the near future.

Its probably best that we move this kind of detailed conversation onto sourceforge. If you want you could file bugs too.

Could you please send me your log files.

Thanks

Unhappy No Love

I am running on a SunLINUX (a.k.a. RedHat 7.2) on a Cobalt qube, which of course has two network interfaces (this may be important later)

I download and installed JRE 1.4.2_01 and the JAI. Did the java -version:

[kcantrel logs]$ java -version
java version "1.4.2_01"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_01-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_01-b06, mixed mode)

The only modification I had to make, was to take the "-a $APP_NAME" out of bash.script since my version of exec didn't support that option. This broke the 'stop' feature, but I can deal with that latter if I get the thing to work.

Anyway, after the JVM starts up I get the typical startup messages about finding files, etc. but then I get an needless loop of:

2003-08-25 23:17:30,881 ERROR [BroadcastThread] BroadcastThread - Operation not permitted
2003-08-25 23:17:30,882 DEBUG [BroadcastThread] BroadcastThread - java.io.IOException: Operation not permitted
at java.net.PlainDatagramSocketImpl.send(Native Method)
at java.net.DatagramSocket.send(Unknown Source)
at org.lnicholls.javahmo.server.BroadcastThread.run(BroadcastThread.java:92)

Not sure what it is even trying to do to see what I can do to allow it. I tried running as 'root' but that didn't seem to matter. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

Regards,

Keith

Wow... I'm out of town this week, but now I can't wait to get home and test out beta 4.

One quick question about the weather functionality. I changed my location in the config file, and the Radar picture accurately represents my location (very cool). However, the Current image never seems to load (it's just black). What is this supposed to be?

Interesting error, Keith. Could be another process is running on the same port, but then I would expect a different error message; maybe it doesnt like the fact that I am broadcasting the beacon packets onto the local network.

Please send me your logs so that I can track the issue.

windracer: Regarding the weather functionality, I havent concentrated on that for a while, it might be broke; the current image is supposed to give you the current weather conditions. The data for the weather is obtained from various weather sites, so that might be a factor.

I did a netstat -n | grep 2190 and it came up empty, so nothing else should be bound to that port.

Note that I find it odd that I have to set my DISPLAY variable before it will even think of coming up (although, nothing ever shows up on my display).

Attached is a zip file with the wrapper and log.txt log file. Note that I delete about 10000 lines of the same error message so the file would not be too big.

Thanks for looking into this.

Regards,

Keith

It appears from the logs that Java has defaulted to the ip address of your public network interface. JavaHMO uses a simple 255.255.255.255 broadcast address on that interface to send the Tivo beacons. This causes an error on your 10.x.x.x ip address.

What is needed is to determine the ip address of the network interface of your private network. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a platform independent way of doing this from Java.

So I am considering adding a configurable address that can be used to specify which network the broadcasts should be sent on.
I hope to have this code ready later this week.

Thanks for the feedback.

Great app, having a small problem. My internet radio playlist loads ok, but when I try to connect to any station I get on my Tivo screen:

"An unexpected error has ocurred while accessing the server"

(Error#1-1-5)"

The same playlist works fine with the Tivo HMO desktop, and is posted next verbatim:

just wanted to say, tried it out, its real nice..I did notice at first I didn't specify a "pictures" folder and left the default in (which isn't a directory on my system) and only showed me music until I pointed it to a valid folder.

Definitely cool that I could see my desktop, so now I can see who's on Instant Messenger from the living room.

weather is a plus, too, since weather channel's on satalitte stink just to get a five day forecast.

I'd honestly rather give it a try on linux rather than Windows. It's not very "windows friendly" since the layout/readme feel very unix, plus all the java stuff dependencies I had to install run in the background, and I hate that stuff..

again, very nice work, and I'm looking forward to more releases.

.kb

Art: Yep, it seems that the playlist code is broke; mine isnt working either. I am hoping to do another release later this week; I will try and put a fix in.

.kb: Thanks for the feedback. The latest version does run under Linux. The weather is still kind of primitive; I just wanted to show what is possible; I hope to have several days forecasts in the future.

At the moment the system is not very consumer-friendly; I am concentrating on getting most of the system to work properly.
I am hoping to add an installation wizard and a GUI to configure the system some time in the future.

Thanks
