Question Default Save times

I was wondering if there was any way to change the default save time for any program to longer than 2 days. I know you can manually change it when you request a recording, but I was also wondering if there was any way you can tell TiVo to automatically save it for a longer period of time. I hate having to manually adjust save times when I want something saved.

Am I missing something here? The default is "Until Space Needed" for TiVo's Suggestions. When you request a recording, either manually or by Season Pass and Wishlist, you can specify how long to keep the recording.

At least that's how it seems to be working for me.

The poster was talking about changing the DEFAULT save time for all recordings. If you have added a drive onto your tivo and have 150 hours, it's annoying that all of the recordings are, by default, set to save for only two days. I'd change it to at least a week or something. Granted, when you have that much space the recordings aren't going to actually be deleted, but it drives me crazy...

I could have sworn that there was a way to do this at some point, but I can't find it on my DirecTivo.

I must be missing something.

The DEFAULT (please excuse my shouting) is "Until Space Needed" for TiVo's Suggestions. I know of no way to change that.

However, you can change the Default for all the recordings you care about. Simply set up Season Passes or Wishlists and select the Recording Options and choose whatever timing you please.

Where are you all getting this "two days?" I don't see that on my TiVo.

You CAN'T choose whatever timing you please.

When you set up a SP you can choose either "Space needed" (which is almost always two days unless you are very short of disc space), or "Until I delete"). You CAN'T increase that two day default.

Thanks for the clarifications. I KNEW I was missing something.

However, I have many "Until Space Needed" programs that hang around for than 2 days. Any other examples of the so-called "2-day default?"

Yes, I'm skeptical about the "so-called 2-day default" because I don't see it on my system.

I'm asking for additional info about it, but so far all I'm hearing is statements that suggest disbelief that I'm not accepting this notion.

Facts please. Just the facts.

Gosh, MuscleNerd. You don't sound like you're having much fun here.

Personally, I enjoy learning more about how all this works. I really love TiVo, and have for some time. And I have been enjoying these Forums, too.

I hope you begin to enjoy your TiVo experience a little more, and learn the fun of being helpful rather than critical of others who are trying to have some fun here.

You're welcome. But you're still missing it!

Yes, of course they do. After two days are up they turn into "!" recordings, they are expired, they are finished, they can be deleted without warning at any time. If you have disc space they aren't deleted exactly 48 hours after the broadcast BUT THE EXPIRY TIME IS STILL 48 HOURS AFTER THE BROADCAST.

Sorry if that looks as if I am shouting, that is because I am.

You can do a "save until" on them to change the expiry time, but this thread is about the fact that we want to change that default expiry time from 2 days to something longer, so that we don't have to do a "save until" on every single recording. (Gambling that it won't be deleted when it has expired and is "!" is too risky - the only way to be sure is to get rid of all the "!"'s).

Look. It is NOT "so-called", it is real. Hope you're not any more.

Thanks for your patient responses, mrtickle.

My yellow dots that turn into exclamation points are the programs that are recorded from my Season Pass and Wishlists.

The programs that TiVo selects from the Suggestions show up with the TiVo emblem, and the info screen explains that this program can be replaced on a space needed basis.

The only "default" I am aware of which we are unable to change is for these TiVo symbols. That is, until after they are recorded. The other programs have selectable save times which can be set in advance.

Strange how a simple attempt to help kvasicek can turn into such a complicated situation. Yet it is good to have a good-natured exchange of information. That's how we all learn.

I'm not very impressed with those who make derogatory inferences in these Forums. It was certainly not my intent to do that here. If anyone perceived my comments in that way, I offer sincere regrets.

Yes, that's what we are talking about. They EXPIRE (turn into "!", can be deleted at any time after that without warning) after a DEFAULT period of 2 days.

We're not talking about suggestions at all.

No, that was before. You are now aware of the default 2 days for Season Passes and Wishlists, because you've just read about it several times.

No they do not. See above. They can only be set afterwards, manually, for each one at a time, extending the DEFAULT "Save until" time of 2 days from Now Playing.

Yes. Unfortunately, for whaever reason you however come across as stubbornly refusing to learn. After the 2 day default is explained to you many times, you still pretend that you don't know about it

Now that we've established that there is a default 2 day expire time, I'll address the original question.

There is an interesting entry on 3.0 tivos, in /SeasonPass/Special there should 1 entry that looks like this:
SeasonPass 1864281/10 {
Version = 1
KeepTime = 432000
RecordQuality = 0
Type = 4
IndexPath = /SeasonPass/Special/004~1864281
}

Now if you look at DbEnum.tcl you will find this:
namespace eval SeasonPassType {
variable Fuzzy 4
variable Keyword 3
variable Manual 2
variable SeriesStation 1
}

432000/86400 = 5 days

And Fuzzy means Suggestion, so that probably means that Suggestions by default will stick around for 5 days and then they will expire and other suggestions will be recorded in their place. Of course, if you run out of space it could be deleted earlier.

So this gives us 2 things to try. First create another entry in /SeasonPass/Special for SeriesStation type and set KeepType to something longer than 2 days (to change the default).
Edit: Or not, I realized you can't create another entry in here because setting the type to anything other than 4 would put it in /SeasonPass/User. So just try the next thing.

The other is to directly set the KeepTime of a specific season pass to something longer than 2 days and see what happens.

Or you could search the resource data for 2 or 86400*2 and see if changing it changes the default expire time.

But any of these changes could be dangerous, so do so at your own risk.

Default Save Times--Whoa!

Ok, everyone, now let's calm down... :-) Being without internet access for a few days can make anyone a little edgy.... including me...

Thank you all for the lovely replies...

I had to scroll almost all the way down to find the answer to my problem, but I did.

A couple of other things... anybody figured out 3.2's BD code? I doubt it, but just figured I would ask. Also- any way at all to tell TiVo that I have an upcoming channel line-up change that HAS NOT taken place yet? Mine has already switched to the new lineup, does not give me the option of returning to my old lineup, and doesn't record some of my shows!!!

Example:

I record a program on channel 33 at 7:30pm every night. TiVo tells me that I have a channel line-up change and switches my season pass to the new channel, 77. There is and will be nothing on channel 77 for about 2 weeks. My program, thus, is not being recorded. I assume I could set up a repeating manual recording for the "old" channel 33 to record the current program (which is the same as my season pass) under a new name and give it a higher priority than that of my season pass, but, truthfully, I have no patience for setting those things up. Any suggestions? Or have I answered my own question? Tanks a lot, and, be nice this time!
