Networking a TiVo for file access?

I did search before I posted this - I promise. I just did not find info on this site/forum regarding my question. So I apologize for the repetition in this post iuf it upsets anyone.

I have a completely stock Philips Series 2 tivo, 80 hour unit. I love it. I helped a friend upgrade his tivo hard drive (thanks to the help of StanSimmons and RobertS) this weekend and now I sort of have the TiVo upgrade bug....

In a perfect world, I'd like to set my tivo up such that it was accessible on my network as a drive - where I could retrieve files and play them on my pc, back them up, perhaps even burn them to dvd. Maybe even vice versa too...

Can anyone tell me a good place to look for a faq or even a how-to on this type of conversion? Currently the TiVo does access the network via a wireless adapter, but that is only for program data. Also, what kind of files would be seen by the PC in this type of conversion? mpegs?

Thanks,
Erik

It doesn't work like that. Even if it did work like that, this subject falls under the 'no video extraction' rule on this site.

Okay, outside of video extraction, could I use a Tivo to store files to share amungst several PCs (things like internet favourites and local mailboxes?)

Why do you keep rewinding that? Because with TiVo, I can.

You can easily do that with a PC. All you need is a case, motherboard and hard drive. And copy of Linux running Samba. Then you can do 'roaming profiles' and your Windows settings and email, etc, will follow you around the network.
