Do you buy your meat from the back of a pickup truck?

I just walked outside to get my mail from our mailbox. A white pickup truck drives by and asks me something. I wasn't sure what, so I said sure. He then asks me to come over to see what type of steaks he has in back. I decline, he persists, and I decline again. Eventually he says ok and drives off. What looks like a chest freezer is in the back of his pickup. Who buys meat this way?

On several occaisions and in different states, I've seen people selling frozen seafood (especially shrimp) from the backs of pickup trucks. And I'm not talking about people parked next to the ocean where you might think they were skipping the middleman and selling to you direct from the boat or something. I've never been tempted to buy from any of them.

My dad's bought meat this way before. He lives in a pretty nice neighborhood and there's a reputable butcher that does delivery/door to door sales.

He doesn't buy it anymore because he now tends to buy stuff more regularly and likes going to the shop.

It's probably meat or seafood that was stole from a real store.

Next time ask where he got it, write down plate number, let cops know about this.

Same guy was seen 2 days standing on a street corner saying - Hey Buddy!!, Wanna buy a Rolex!!

There's a big difference between a guy selling meat out of a cooler in a pickup and a butcher that does door to door delivery.

The only time I've bought meat like this is from a butcher that sells at the local Farmer's Market each weekend. And I was highly suspect with that (but damn he had good bacon!)

Around here this is one of the scams that the Irish Travelers (Gypsys) run. There have been reports that the meat is outdated, mislabled, or mishandled. Some of the other scams they run are bogus electrical repairs, shoddy asphalt paving, and uneccessary roof repairs, mostly preying on elderly people.

My wife's great aunt fell for the electrical repair scam. They got in, flipped a couple of breakers, convinced her the house was going to burn down, and a few thousand dollars later left without doing any work at all.

Google "Irish Travelers". They're a pretty interesting group.

Not to be ignorant but most of these guys I have encountered are Italian not Irish but I have heard and seen horror stories form the Gypsys in our area.

Around here, there are a bunch of guys that come around trying to sell vacuum packed meat from some want-a-be Omaha steaks, telling you it's grain fed black angus. Same guys come around other times of the year selling other junk, like kids books, toys, or magazines. My mom bought some from a guy that told her he was selling it to raise money for college, her dog would barely eat it.

Was it a Horizon Foods truck?

They canvassed our neighborhood about 5 years ago and did have pretty good looking frozen fish and meats at the time.

I found their secretive pricing to be a big turnoff though. None of their literature has any pricing on it, and I was told that was because they have different "promotions" running at any given time.

I asked what it would cost to get some fillet mignon and salmon fillets and they guy went off to the side and started working some numbers on a piece of paper like a used car salesman. He would only give me a total price instead of a detailed breakdown. It didn't take long to figure out that no matter what package of stuff we chose it would have cost hundreds of dollars. I told him I wasn't prepared to spend hundreds of dollars on food with a company I knew nothing about and asked him to leave. The only thing he could counter with was, "But your neighbor is happy with our service". At least at a supermarket or butcher, I know who I am dealing with and what everything costs.

A new rep and what I assume was a trainee came by a few months ago and launched into the same sales pitch. I was short with him and told him if he wanted to leave some literature with a price list, I would take a look at it. He declined and left. His trainee has been by once since then and Horizon Foods now gets the "Jehovah's Witness treatment": we don't even bother answering the door.

Every summer we get the Strawberry salesmen. A guy comes to the door with a luggage cart hauling flats of strawberries. By afternoon ( when they reach our door) those poor berries are lookin pretty sad after a day in the sun.
My theory is that these guys found a coupla empty strawberry flats and planned a few midnight raids on the local farms and are now going door to door. I've never bought any from them.

No, it's not even a labelled truck. More like a personal vehicle. Was rather odd. They weren't stopping and knocking, and only spoke to me because I was outside at the time.

Weird... I do remember something like that happening to me when I was in college with stereo speakers.

I used to be a regular Horizon Foods customer - their food was terrific, albeit a little pricey. I stopped buying from them only because I didn't want to buy whole boxes of one type of meal (ex. 4 tri-tips, or 20 lemon chicken breasts).

The White Van Speaker Scam. It's a classic. I remember readina narticle a while ago about this. As it turns out, there is a worldwide cartel that controls this scam.

One day when I was in one of our remote ofices, a guy came in just before close from Iowa Steaks, a company that he claimed to be a subsidiary of Omaha Steaks. It was a similar speal, something about having a surplus. They had business cards, literature and everything. I thought it was shady, but some of the women still bought meat from him. I never did hear how they liked it.
