I think the ability to share things over the internet between users would be fun. I know there are some serious legal issues with someone recording something off of say HBO and then someone with basic antenna service trying to get to it would be a problem, but maybe since tivo makes a channel lineup, it could compare them between users and if the channel it was recorded off of isn't on the list, then it won't be available for download. This would be for people who are connected via broadband as well. Also, give the user the option to share or not share, or select certain things to share.

I saw someone post something about SNL doing a skit on Harry Potter, and since I don't often watch SNL I missed it. It would be cool if I could just do a search for that particular episode and watch it.

There may be more legal issues that I am not thinking of, or this may just be a bad idea in general, just throwing it out there.

Just sharing programs is illegal, since most are copyrighted, and ones license to receive a program does not usually include the right to distribute it.

With that, Tivo Inc doesn't want to become an accessory to such wholesale copyright violations, as Repaly has and proven wrong to do so.

Thanks for the info. I have only had my tivo for a couple of weeks and knew there had to be a thread on this somewhere, just couldn't find it.

Unfortunately, just because you had access to the program and didn't record or view it, doesn't abrogate copyright laws. The fair use doctrine allows for time shifting/recording for personal use, but not for sharing with others. It's a can of worms that TiVo doesn't want to open.
